Hurricane Norbert

Now a Category Three storm, Hurricane Norbert is expected to make landfall this weekend on the Baja Peninsula. Forecasters predict Norbert will weaken and will land north of La Paz, avoiding a direct hit on Los Cabos. The storm will then travel through the states of Sonora and Sinaloa over the weekend.

Best Western Xalapa

Good value for money. Yet, rooms were dark (little light) and with dark carpet, which makes the rooms even darker and not that attractive. Rooms are also small but clean. However there are plenty of TV channels, bathroom is ok, breakfast is ok too, and location is pretty decent more

Posada La Mariquinta

The gardens and artwork make this a delightful retreat. It is extremely clean and well-kept. There is a discount for multiple nights, a deposit is required with the reservation, and the balance due upon arrival (cash only). Very helpful staff who respect the privacy of the guests. more

Excellent 'supercocina'. They serve you a full, delicious, though fairly simple, meal for less than 40 pesos. more

Stay away from this place!!, for starters the only windows in our room lead to a small light cube inside the freaking building so there's absolutely no natural light in the room whatsoever and u can listen every single noise in the rooms nearby, which windows are only 3 meters away and if you open the curtains you can also... more

We recently stayed at La Mariquinta and from the reviews we expected great hospitality. Unfortunately the owner did not receive us and his staff was not very helpful or welcoming. Although the room was comfortable, except for a full-size bed that was small for both of us, the parking is very complicated and a hassle. The hotel itself is in... more

Xalapa is a bustling medium-sized university town in Veracruz state which is well worth a visit, especially if you are traveling from Mexico City or Puebla (another very worthwhile destination!) toward Veracruz City and the gulf coast. The Posada La Mariquinta is a superbly well run and reasonably priced (about $65 US for a small suite) place to stay on... more

While we love the food in Veracruz, restaurants hardly ever have vegetables. We pigged out at the buffet in this hotel. We had tons of salads and vegetable dishes! They also had a great variety of other local and continental dishes. But we were craving salad and vegetables! This is a 3+ property and the front desk guy was very... more

Five centuries of history of Xalapa and Mexico. Owned by many people including Santa Anna 11 times president of Mexico and the one forced to give half of Mexico's territory to the USA. But this museum if not about him entirely. It houses an excellent collection of antique furniture, including maybe Santa Anna's bed. This place if run by some... more

My daughter, son-in-law, a family friend, and I recently spent 4 nights at La Mariquinta in October 2007. This was my fifth visit to Xalapa but my first time staying at La Mariquinata. I chose it this time because we would be celebrating my daughter's birthday and my daughter and son-in-law's wedding anniversary during our stay and I wanted the... more

Meson Del Alferez

I did not "stay." I lived at Meson de Alferez for three weeks while guiding a student exchange with the University of Veracruz, which is associated with this hotel. I had no problems with my room or the staff, although my first room assignment was too small to live in for three weeks. The hotel changed it in minutes. Be... more

My experience in this hotel was absolutely a nightmare. I travel constantly and have stayed in hundreds of hotels, this is the absolute worst! Do not stay here. The management overcharged us. They literally were trying to steal money from us when we were about to pay, they changed their price throughout our stay. The hotel is dirty and messy,... more

We can't say enough about the La Mariquinta in Xalapa. Our room was huge and beautiful with new refrigerator and kitchenette and a new very nice bathroom. Our room opened into a common area with couch, coffee table, dining table, and coffee maker and microwave. This room opened into a totally private courtyard with beautiful landscaping. The main area opens... more

A friend recommended this hotel because of its location, within walking distance of the center of town but in a quiet neighborhood. These are its strong points. The grounds and gardens are very nice, too, as is the coffee shop. No one at the front desk could speak enough English to be useful, however, and there were little problems with... more

With weather similar to a tropical rain forest, shoe stores on every corner for the shoe lover in you, and food for every taste bud, this place is great beyond words. If you like small city life with just enough to keep you busy this could be the perfect vacation spot. Within a twenty minute drive are coffee plantations offering... more

The staff here is not friendly. The rooms are rundown. The pool is not clean enough to swim in. There are plenty of decent places to stay in Xalapa for half the price. The staff at this hotel does not like gringos...they do not want to accommodate you if you are speaking English, or look like a tourist. Most of... more

Once again our Lonely Planet took us to a nice place, this time Meson del Alferez. We needed a single and a double room and one of the staff members showed us several (nice) rooms. The double room had a living room, bathroom and upstairs was the bedroom. The single room was nice, clean and spacious too. Breakfast was included.... more

The Posada del Cafeto is a quaint oasis in the big city of Xalapa. This is a small establishment of 30 rooms. The courtyard is a veritable garden that reminds you of being in a rain forest. Breakfast was an enjoyable experience where you could watch the meal being prepared by a young couple who seem genuinely interested in your... more

NO heat and NO a/c but a wonderful hotel in the middle of the shopping district, one block from the Cathedral, and one block from the most beautiful main park of any Mexican city I have visited. An old-fashioned little hotel just a few blocks from the main plaza, with very reasonable prices. Just don't expect first-class accomodations. It's made up of a series of small rooms around a courtyard. I looked at a number of rooms before choosing mine. Most are dark, and ventilation can be a problem. Chances are, your window will open right onto... more
