my hubby and I stayed here for one night in Dec 09 after a drive down from te araroa. check in and checkout were easy and the staff were really nice and helpful. We booked 4 nights at this Motel Lodge and within one hour of checking in went to the front desk and cut it down to 1 night's stay. The vibe was creepy and quiet and sort like a horror movie with the Bate's Motel. There are NO nearby grocery stores, and the only food is the "restaurant" on site. The... more

This place was filthy and other backpackers complained of theft. The staff was the most rude i have seen along my travels. The kitchen was FULL of flies. There was no quiet place to sit. They allow camping so the hostel common areas are overcrowded. They do a free pick up but would not take us back to the bus... more
