I visited Furusato Onsen on my first trip to Japan. We travelled from Miyazaki to Kagoshima and took a detour onto the Sakurajima peninsula (it used to be an island until a recent eruption of Mt. Sakurajima) to visit the volcano, the buried tori and the onsen. It is unusual amongst onsen (hot springs) in that mixed bathing is allowed... more

This hotel seems pleasant enough although it is not close to anything. My single room did NOT face the ocean and was very small by American standards. Try to get one of the double rooms (all of these have balconies) on the ocean/volcano side of the hotel. The view is great. Both the Japanese and Western/Asian fusion restaurants are nice.... more
