La Merced del Alto

6 Apr 2009

Probably the most beautiful hotel of our Argentina trip. In a stunning location outside of the charming village of Cachi, this place should not disappoint. Professional staff, beautiful common spaces, great views from the room. Very quiet hotel, with spacious and tasteful rooms. A perfect place to decompress & explore the surroundings. Make sure you catch the sunrise over the... more

We booked last minute and the drive to Cachi (4 hours from Salta) was well worth it - if not abit scary driving round the mountains and on gravel road. The views are amazing and the drive was wonderful. The town of Cachi is small, smart and very welcoming. This boutique hotel is awesome - we upgraded to a room... more

Nice cabins in a stunning peaceful landscape of high mountains, thousands of cactuses and a village few kms away. The kitchen facilities are rather basic (barely functioning gas) but you can make a simple food. Very friendly and helpful couple who runs the place. Buy the food stuff from the Cachi village. You reach the place with a normal vehicle... more

This is a charming property with all the amenities one could ask for. Alberto, his wife and their staff are warm and inviting, willing to share this special place with visitors. We stayed in the master suite and it was amazing. The food is also special as is the scenery. We traveled in Argentina for a couple of weeks and... more

So happy to have discovered Miraluna. Its a bit of a drive to get to it as its about 7 kms over a dirt road, but well worth it. These are new cabins in the middle of no where. We stayed in a one room cabin, the bedroom is separated by a curved wall. Great furnishings and decor. There is... more

We stayed at the Merced del Alto for three nights at the beginning of October. It is situated about 2 kilometres outside Cachi and is approached by a rubble ( ripio ) road from the town. Its position is imposing and the architecture reminiscent of a convent with a bell tower. The internal areas are spacious. At the week-end the hotel was busy and... more

We had written down some hotels form ruta0 and the one place on Tripadvisor. We ended up walking up and down different streets to find little residencias and hostels along the streets by the plaza. We found a little residencia for 90 that would have been fine, but was a little smelly. We kept going. Another hotel was similar but... more

Bodega El Molino de Cachi

After a long drive to reach Cachi there could have been no better place to arrive to draw breath and completely relax. The El Molino was a wonderful place - a cross between a family home, a boutique hotel and a bodega - to spend a couple of days, and we would have happily spent more time here had it... more

Cachi is a small place in the mountains 4 hours from Salta. The buss ride is in itself exiting, displaying some excellent views of the mountains, and crossing a National Park. Cachi itself is one of those places you love to stay for a week after hard traveling. In the middle there is a beautiful well kept park, and a... more

Good location and excellent restaurant. The rooms are a little impersonnal. One watch-out: do not let any valuable in your room (phone for instance) even for one second: we learnt it the hard way. But it was the first time ever as the manager said... Despite that issue, good place to stay to visit the area more

Large hotel sitting above the town of Cachie, spread out in its own grounds, rather like something in a hill station in India. You come to the hotel as you arrive after the five hour slog on unmade roads from Cafayate. Great for beers on the lawn, but a sterile barn of a restaurant, not helped by only a few... more

We stayed two nights at the La Merced del Alto. The hotel is set amongst the mountains of the Andes and feels like entering an ancient white-washed converted monastery or nunnery but with all the amenities of a 5 star hotel, perfect. Large rooms, deep, comfortable beds with crisp cotton sheets and cavernous bathrooms. It's only drawback - it's not... more

Fantastic place, great rooms and garden. very quiet. Great views. It looks like a colonial building but is brand-new. It is indeed pretty expensive compared to other hotels in town but if you enjoy waking up and looking at the Sierra, listening to birds, that is the place. Nice restaurant & wines We would especially recommend it if you need... more

A mile away from Cachi, a really unspoiled gem of the Cafayate valley. All newly built but a well done copy of a colonial style monastery. You have to look twice to see that it is not original. Perfect but unpretentious service by a very friendly stuff and delicious food and wine cellar. The lama steak tartar was fabulous. Nice... more

We stayed in El Cortijo during a two day trip through the Calchaqui Valleys (run by Turismo San Lorenzo-highly recommended). The hotel was beautiful- although it had more of a B&B feel to it. The staff was extremely friendly and spoke excellent English. There is also an internet cafe right around the corner. The rooms, while not huge, were very... more

We stayed in the suite, which certainly wasn't cell-like - and as I think it cost £40, well worth splashing out on if it's available. We had a private terrace with views of the mountains, where out breakfast was served. The rest of the hotel was absolutely delightful, from the decor and the excellent food to the friendly staff. If... more

My partner and I are well-travelled through out Argentina and understand that the provinces may not always stand up to the cosmopolitan attitudes found in Buenos Aires, but nothing prepared us for the hostility and scorn the matron of El Molino cast upon us due to us being a male couple wishing to share the same bedroom (and bed). After... more

Cachi is about a 5-hour drive from Salta and is in the middle of some spectacular mountain and canyon scenery. The drive south to the wine town of Cafayate passes some pretty villages and heads across the high desert, an amazing but gruelling drive. Our tour operator, Journey Latin America, had us drive Cachi-Cafayate-Salta in one day but this was... more
