We enjoyed the very many steps down and up. carefull: This is not for people which are in a poor physicall shape, and you must climb all the way back from the deep cave. The sensor in the cave is simple and highly sensitive. It can measure the weight of the snow covering the earth above the cave. The big... More

The cave is massive and well worth a visit but be prepared for a steep climb on the way back up. More

While taking the tram from Trieste to Opicina, on a fluke we decided to wait for the #42 bus out of Opicina to the 5th largest cave in the world, and it was SO worth it! 500 steps down, 500 steps up, all with my 77 year old mom's bad knee! It is a guided tour, with a very knowledgable... More

Visiting the Grotta Gigante was definitely worth it! Seeing the Grotta was like being on the set of an Indiana Jones movie. It was such a great natural wonder to behold. The stairs were not too taxing so don't be scared by the warnings. We took the Opicina Tramway up, transferred to the 42 bus line and arrived at the... More

We went to the Grotta Gigante with a 1 1/2 year old babygirl. The 500 steps down and 500 steps up is a bit too much for small feet, but if you can carry the little one on the arm the entire way, don't cheat yourself for a visit to this amazing cave. There was no waiting time at the... More

This cave is amazing, the guide was good, the 500 (yes, 500!) steps down were not too bad and the 500 up were not so bad either. Plenty of places to stop and catch your breath. I got the Tram from central Trieste to Villa Opicina, but it is too far to walk (in my opinion) to the caves from... More

Though the Grotto Gigante is impressive, at the end of the day its just a big hole in the ground. Iif you want to see some very very impressive caves travel further west across the border in to Slovenia to the caves in Postojna. These are far more impressive and definitely worth the extra half hour drive!! More

Just the biggest caven you can possibly imagine ....and then multiply that by 10! There are huge stalegmites that are over 200,000 years old .... and still growing!! Yes there are a lot of... More
