This is an unusual opportunity to visit several volcanic lava tubes. The caves are fascinating, it’s a rare chance to see how molten rock behaves, I love the way it froze as it dripped from the ceiling. The path through the caves was in excellent condition, but I felt the handrail was a bit low for me. As always in...

For many years I drove past the caves, but finally last week we went in the afternoon. I was most impressed with the easy foot paths, video footage, cleanliness and well spoken tour guides. This is a great place to visit and worth every penny (8euros)

These caves I think were a little disappointing. It was just an ok from me and the other family members as it seemed quite basic in drumming up the tension and excitement of what should of been a great experience!. My 3 year old son loved it though and i think as a small local attraction it was fine, but...

Agree whole-heartedily with previous comments about the cheesie visitor centre and displays. If I could have skipped it, would have - but we were on an Island tour (unexpected stop, due to a couple who wanted to visit the caves and prebooked the visit, without out knowledge). We booked a "West Island" tour via Madeira Happy Tours and ended up...

However, the gardens between car park and centre are lovely, there's a really well stocked souvenir shop at...

These are ok, and the visitor centre following the cave tour is interesting. But don't expect any excting finds... these caves are not the most beautiful.

The exhibition part is a bit naff indeed, but the children in our group seemd to have fun. If you're on holiday, take it easy and enjoy :-) The caves are very interesting, definitely worth a visit.

From my old (unfortunately dated) guidebook, i understood this to be a free display of the volcanic tubes, but they have now expanded the complex in order to draw as much cash out of the tourist as possible.
It costs 8 euros, and you are now forced to endure the tacky visitor education centre, unless you have the knowledge beforehand...
