About
I run an outdoor woodland workshop in a shelter on the banks of the River Wharfe. Here people come and learn to make wooden items using hand tools and green wood sourced very locally. The skill level is from beginner, through to those who have knowledge of woodworking and would like to try their hand at working in unseasoned timber. I make wooden ware for sale such as furniture, gates, spoons etc. Trees and wildlife surround the workshop - and sometimes call in during courses.

I had the most amazing day. I started with a log and a plank and came out with a bench. Axes, Froes, draw knives, Tenon cutters and a hand auger were used.
Fresh air, hard work and new skills - Fantastic. Lunch by the river in the sun. A good nights sleep.
Richard is very knowledgeable about all aspects of working with wood using traditional methods. I would definitely recommend a day out with Richard.
What a fantastic Birthday present.

We are a group of four girls who had a brilliant day with RIchard making reindeers and a pig. Richard is an excellent tutor informative, patient and very interesting. We all acquired new skills and are very proud of our completed animals. We thoroughly recommend the four hour course which included a lovely soup lunch.

My sister and I booked for a birthday treat and each made a reindeer. The 4 hour course is relaxed and the Strid Wood setting is idyllic. I enjoyed using traditional wood-working tools (even though I had absolutely no experience). The making process was just hard enough to require concentration but not too difficult as to induce anxiety! Richard is an excellent tutor - friendly, helpful and interesting. I would not hesitate in recommending this experience, in fact I plan to go back again myself.

We had an awesome day with Richard learning many new techniques for working with wood. We were complete novices but came away with some lovely wooden creations which we are very proud of. The setting in Bolton Abbey is beautiful. A day very well spent, highly recommended

Thank you Richard for such a great day and excellent introduction into the world of green woodworking. I bought this day as a Christmas present for my partner and was delighted with how much we both enjoyed it. The location is beautiful and Richard was a fantastic teacher who patiently took us through each step making sure both of us had something to do at all times. The day just flew by and we were kept more than entertained. We came home with our mallets, rounders bats and wooden elves and a real desire to carry on this great skill.

Had a great day with my friend making a pig with Richard. There were just 5 of us and that included one little girl who was helped by mummy. Is a good entertaining day out with a good end result to bring home. Help is always on hand and as for the setting wow. Richard offers various
courses to suit all abilities.

Richard was a really great and knowledgable host for the day, and I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. Beautiful surroundings and relaxed atmosphere made for an amazing experience, and I left so enthused that I have already made 3 more reindeer in just 4 days!

I've just spent a day with Richard in Strid Woods where he has his workshop. The day lasted from 9.30am to 4.30am. I was fortunate that we had one of the last sunny days of early November. The location is magical - you look out through trees down onto the River Wharfe. There are birds hopping around the trees and even into the workshop which is an Aladdin's cave of chunks of wood and rustic wood working tools all covered by a large sail-like tarpaulin.
There are various options open to people spending a day but I was keen to have a go at making a wooden pot. This involved hollowing out a length of birch log then fitting a base and lid, all using hand tools, no power involved at all. Many of the tools and techniques have been used for hundreds of years.
Richard is a very engaging and patient tutor and lets you crack on - with the odd wise word and bits of help to enable you to achieve your objective without leaving too many of your fingers on the ground at the end.
You bring a packed lunch with you but Richard provides warm drinks (water heated in a fine Kelly Kettle) as well as delicious home made biscuits.
Working with the wood you soon get warm but need to bring warm clothes for the times when you are less energetic. Also stout and warm footwear.
I would thoroughly recommend this as a wonderful day out, working with wood in the most natural and direct way possible.
