We left Montignac-sur-Vezere and discovered this fort/chateau/maision (La Maison Forte de Reignac) around a corner in the road. What a wonderful surprise stop! Built under the escarpments, it justs out from the rock into which it has been dug; it conceals huge rock shelters that have witnessed some interesting events for more than 20,000 years (yes, that is right)! In... More

Chateau built in the rocks. Open not long ago to the public. They were doing some excavations so when you visit you will see objects from the stone age to belongings of the family that owned the place and lived there until a few years ago. More

The Maison Forte is a 'must see' in the Dordogne. This fortified medieval house built into the side of a cliff is designed around a complicated series of shallow caves. It is great to explore for all ages, but there are lots of stairs to climb so not for anyone with mobility issues. The main rooms have been really well... More

What a fantastic place. Even the car park is a nice place to sit and look at the history of the house on one side and the tranquillity of the river on the other. History goes back about 15,000 years with the first occupants of the cave behind the house, and just carries on from there forward. Very well presented... More

The Maison Forte de Reignac dominates the valley where it's situated. You can see its defensive position and see why man has sought refuge here for 2,000 years or more. Behind the medieval facade lie the remains of ancient human civilisation. When you enter the main house you find yourself in a museum which sets the tone for the visit... More

One of the most interesting sights in the Les Eyzies region. Has been open since 2006 because behind the castle of limestone people found at that time the remainings of human habitation from the prehestoric time. This part was lived in for over 20.000 years and are the oldest remaings in the valley. The chateau is restored for a great... More

The house is in the cliff face on the way to Roque St Christophe and I have no idea why I have never seen it in Englsh language guidebooks as it is better! The owner bought the house from the Bordeaux department in the first part of the 2000's and it was opened to the public in 2006. The rooms... More

We were in this region of France and enjoying all the sites recommended by Rick Steves when we passed by this recently opened site that is still not listed in any English language tour book. We had a bit of extra time on our way to see the cave paintings and saw about 20 cars parked at the site and... More
