Its more then 40 min by train to tama center from Shinjuku. There are few plaza and 2-3 hotels in that area, but its more like outskirts of Tokyo. My kids love Hello Kitty so naturally they loved it here. Contrary to what other people said here wasn't alot of people when we visited on a Sunday. Ticket was $4400 yen for adult so it wasn't cheap. Kids loved it, nightmare for parents! Its Hello Kitty gone nuts! Be prepared for no English on the limited rides or shows. Not set up for foreign tourists what so ever.
