To be honest, I didn't love it - but it was a stormy afternoon and I was a bit mesmerized by cherry blossoms from other gardens. Rikugien is not really a cherry blossom/super flowery garden (although there are some beautiful trees and blooms). It's more of a forest garden, with some formal water areas and some "rambling" meadow/forest type areas... More

Rikugien is a Japanese-style garden built in 1702 by a Daimyo (territorial lord) of Kawagoe who enjoyed confidence of the fifth Tokugawa Shogun, Tsunayoshi. The name Rikugi derives from the Chinese style classification of Japanese Waka poetry that appears in the Kokin Wakashu, the Imperial anthology of Collected Japanese Poems of Ancient and Modern Times (published in 905). It is... More

I had read that this out-of-the-way garden was wonderful, and is it ever! I was there twice, nearly 3 weeks apart, and the last time I was there, the azaleas had just burst into bloom--gorgeous! Just 5 mins. you will get to Rikugien Garden. Don't need to go further to watch autumn leaves, just visit here. Simply get off at JR Komagome Stn. Entry fee applies but not so expensive. These is Japanese style cafe to relax in. The garden itself is not so big, takes half an hour to walk around the pond. More

Surprised there is no English review for this excellent garden: completed in 1702 that offers an oasis of peace in the center of Tokyo. If you have a few hours for a morning or afternoon visit you will be glad you did. Take the subway to Komagome station (Namboku Line Station N-14). It's a five minute walk S-E along Hongo-Dori...
