Timespan is a cultural centre that contains a museum telling a story from the harbour to the hills. It has the only contemporary art gallery in the county which has six exhibitions a year which follow the organisations annual themes. The archive contains more than eleven thousand items donated by the local community and contains genealogy information of many of the local families. The River Cafe offers home baking and light lunches with some outdoor seating by the river enabling you to watch the wildlife close up. Well worth a visit
This was a perfect place to visit on a rainy day on the North Coast 500 route. Interesting museum, including an interactive room with hightech equipment bringing the past to life. Some modern artwork to view in a gallery upstairs.

Well worth a visit - very child friendly.
Absolutely fantastic. They do a variety of crepes in the cafe which were delicious and well received cups of coffee and tea. The museum was very interesting and had a lot of information about the surrounding area - the VR room was brilliant (from 2 people that had never used it before) and really brought the history to life. The reconstructions of the blacksmiths and house were really good as well. It was interesting to see the peat sledge.

An interesting little museum with reference to the highland clearances
A very interesting little museum with items showing how the population lived in past times. Video loops and VR headsets available too. We enjoyed the pancakes and coffee at the museums Riverside cafe. There is often a changing exhibition on the upper floor.

This museum offers a text and statistical look at the Clearances and their aftermath, then adds interviews with cleared people, and reconstructed village shop, smithy and croft house. Well done!

We should have been warned when , at 12.30 pm the cafe was empty. There was all day breakfast on the menu, but little else. My friends ordered the vegetarian breakfast, I asked if it was possible for something on toast, or a sandwich. This was not possible. So I went with the breakfast expecting vegetarian sausages , beans etc. The breakfast duly arrived. It comprised a very dry pancake , which was spread with an egg mixture and some tomato and folded over This was served with lots of chopped lettuce and a bit of tomato. We were all disappointed, and I could not eat the food. The coffee, served in a small cup, was also disappointing, Altogether a very poor experience and we would not call in again.
The place was clean in a beautiful setting , but I have never been in such a uncompromising and unfriendly place.

This is a small museum giving a short history of the area. A lot of it is about The Clearances which had a devastating effect on the local folk and changed the area forever. The story is told mostly in one room with a video on a loop in another and some reconstructed rooms at the end of the exhibition. It is done well and you can spend a pleasant hour or so on the museum. There is also a cafe there for refreshments and light meals.

Four middle aged friends stopped off in Helmsdale whilst driving the NC500, and after wandering around taking in the views for a while we came across the museum and decided to have a look around. This wasn’t a planned item on our itinerary, but we’re glad that we happened across this museum as it was quite a nice way to spend a bit of time taking in the history of the area. It was well set out and the information was very good, especially the short video we watched. A good place to visit if you are in the area.

Easy to find in the charming town of Helmsdale, we were warmly welcomed and found the museum both informative and well laid out. The entry fee was very reasonable (especially considering some of the others that we encountered on the NC500) and the staff were friendly. After being a little disappointed by the lack of mention of the Highland Clearances at Dunrobin Castle in the morning, Timespan truly did them justice, bringing the history of the town, and the local area, to life.

Very interesting place, all about the clearances and the herring industry. Well worth the £4 entry fee. Easy to find in the centre of the village.
