Ok, I do understand that this is a rescue zoo; but, I'm also being pragmatic about my value for money traveling with my family of 4. La Selva is exceptionally small - basically a really large backyard space of the owners. Honestly, the tour was pretty lacking - we came late in the day at sunset time (as suggested by... More

I was hesitant to write this somewhat negative review since I genuinely think the owner cares about the animals and is doing important work by rehabilitating them. However, I did want to share our strange experience. We were staying at a hotel nearby in Carillo and noticed advertisements for La Selva. We did not have a car but our hotel... More

It is best to go here around 4:30 - 5:00 p.m., as during the hot part of the day, most of the animals are asleep. I love that there are lots of domestic pet cats roaming around the grounds. More

Interesting place where great work is done rescuing animals including a raccoon with climbed on my back! A little small and a little smelly but interesting nonetheless. More

We visited the zoo one morning during our recent visit to Samara. the guide throughout the zoo was very interesting. She explained how many months etc it would be until various animals could be reintroduced to the wild. Since we were there in the morning, the cats that they had were in their boxes and we really couldn't see them.... More

Although I didn't think to bring my camera I wanted to let everyone know that this Refuge is a worthwhile visit. Some people actually got to handle some of the animals and the first hand information on what we need to do to preserve the animals habitat was interesting. The kid in you and the nature lover of your soul... More

This is small wildlife refuge run by a couple that is dedicated to the rehabilitaion of rescued animals. They know what they are doing, and the little tour they give is very informative. This is a great chance to get upclose to some very rare wildlife and learn a little something at the same time. The admission and donations are... More

This was a very small refuge for animals, located behind a hotel in playa carillo. The owner was a very sweet lady who explained to me that the animals were kept there until they could be freed back into the wild from whatever injury they had. There was an alligator, very vocal birds, the ones in the front of the... More

One of the great things about Costa Rica is the amazing number of animal species that live there. We had never even heard of a kinkajou, a jaguarundi, or a vampire bat. We were fascinated by the anteater walking around on it's amazing feet and were delighted by the baby howler monkey that followed us around on the tour. We... More

My husband and I were staying at the Hideaway Hotel in Playa Samara and saw signs for La Selva Wildlife Refuge. I love animals and have been a volunteer at Proyecto Asis for over a year so whenever we can we visit other wildlife rescues. The rescue is located just past Playa Carrillo and cost 7,000 colones per person ($14).... More
