I used my Japan Rail pass to go to the most northerly station - Wakkenai (which I really liked) and then the exciting ferry journey to Rebun. Beautiful scenery and plenty to do.

I had the opportunity to visit Rebun, part of the Rishiri Rebun National Park, for a couple of days in August 2011. It is a fantastic place to see!
