We spent 2 nights here in March and absolutely loved it. Its a small and peaceful village, surrounded by beautiful nature. I would definitely splurge a little bit and stay at a traditional Ryokan with indoor and outdoor onsen (and maybe even with a private onsen), which serves halfboard and great Kaiseki meals.
There is not much to do, besides enjoying the onsen, walking around and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. Its best to come with enough cash, as there are no ATM's in Kurakowa Onsen.

Took the highway bus from Fukuoka to Kurokawa Onsen. The journey took approximately 2.5 hours, and the fare is a little expensive (3,110 yen one way). Spent a night in one of the ryokan. The town is small but very pretty. Great for photographs, especially during winter with snow. The onsen at the ryokan are good (private and public).

If you are city folks and looking for a quiet getaway, this is the place. However, if you are the sort of person who likes concrete buildings, shopping malls, fancy restaurants, michelin star meals - this is not the place for you. The people that come to this town are outdoor lovers, and they enjoy outdoor Onsens. Most onsens here are open air baths and this place is lined with quaint ryokans. So, you have to like all these in order to spend a few quiet days here.
All in all, I rate this place average as Compared to Kinosaki Onsen, Kaga Onsen in Honshu, and Josankei in Hokkaido, as this place is a bit rural for me.

Came here on the way from Beppu to Kumamoto. Tried the onsen but the facility is so bare minimum.
Indoor onsen is a small rectangle shape onsen. Water is average, can’t feel any difference from normal water.
Outdoor onsen is against a rock wall formation, water is nice and soft.
There’s just a handful cubicle for bathing, so I can’t see how it can advertise to fit around 30 people and this is one of the larger facility here.
I can stay a bit longer if there’s drinking water provided like most hotels in Gero, Sapporo and Kinosaki.
Other than shampoo, conditioner and bath soap provided, with the price of 780 Yen per pax, you have to bring everything yourself.
The small onsen town has very little to offer in terms of eatery and shopping. The walking strip is shared with vehicles so it can be dangerous walking around. If you are not keen on climbing hills, walking here can be challenging because there’s plenty of uphill and windy path.
Now that I’ve been here, that’s one tick in the list of onsen town in Japan.

Not sure if it is worth the visit. We spent two days here and enjoyed the drive here more than the stay.

A very charming onsen town albeit a little touristy. This is the place you can walk around in your yukata. For ¥1300 you can get an onsen pass to visit three onsens among the twenty over onsens in the town. The town is very compact and walkable within a short time. Many nice little shops, cafes and restaurants. Like most onsen town in Japan, shops will be closed after 5pm so it’s advisable to have your meals at the ryokan.

This is an intriguing and wonderful place... maybe a bit touristy... but well worth the visit. Its streets and alleyways are lined with beautiful old buildings and a myriad of eateries and places of distraction. The town boasts a huge number of onsens... of which we rated the out-of-town Yamamizuki best of the ones we tried (see separate review). It was late afternoon when we sought out a great little place for some delicious beef yakitori before our early evening bathing (5-5.30pm)... the perfect time to do it, as it just before closing and the warm and skin-softening waters help ensure a great night's sleep.

We stayed 2 nights in this village full of ryokan with their own infrastructure linked to the hot springs water. You can go to any hotel with à pass and it allows you to try different ryokan baths

We took a highway bus (2 & half hours) from Kumamoto Bus Terminal. We booked the seats online in Singapore through the Japan BusOnline portal. Remember to bring a copy of your bus e-ticket. Yoy can also get the bus ticket at the bus tetminal at least one day before departure during office hours.
We spent 2 days at Kurokawa to do the walking routes. All routes are about 4 km return. Route 1 is the easiest & you get to enjoy streams, brooks & forest scenery. Route 1 has some slight inclines but not difficult. Very scenic mountain views. On a clear day, you can see Mt Aso. Route 2 was closed during our time of visit.
Most people go to Kurokawa to do onsen hopping. You can get the pass at the Information Centre for 1300 yen & choose 3 onsens from a selection of 20 plus onsens to enjoy. Do note that the onsens are spread out so you need to do a fair bit of walking to onsen hop. We did not buy the pass as we're happy just using the onsen at our ryokan Ichinoi. When we were walking route 1, we stopped over at Yamamizuki Onsen for a quick dip to refresh ourselves. It has lovely riverside open baths. Entrance fee was 600 yen. Bring your own towel or pay 300 yen for one at the counter. There is a free shuttle back to village centre every 30 mins.
The village comes alive with day trippers from Fukuoka, Yufuin & other cities in the late morning. There is a small street to browse the little shops & have lunch.
If you are staying overnight, best to have meal plans with your ryokan as all the shops & eateries close at around 5 pm.

We cancel our stay in kurokawa as I felt the price too expensive, it's sgd500 without meal, we spend less than 30 mins to drive around but hardly see any restaurant for lunch, during winter we can't soak much in Onsen to prevent winter rash, so there's really nothing to do in this area.

Are there any attractive sights in Kurokawa onsen town that I can visit when I am not soaking in the onsens? I am thinking of spending 3D/2N there to relax but is wondering if that might be a bit too long since the town is small and may not offer much to do? Are there any nice trails in the area?

Hello.Sher. If you do not visit Kurokawa yet, I must show you some way to get there from Fukuoka. JR lines from Hakata in Fukuoka will take you Hita where is an halfway to Kurokawa, there you will change to bus servise which takes you to the destination Kuokawa. Do not miss only four servises a day. Good luck, Sher.

How easy is it to access the onsens in this area if you dont have a car and plan on using trains ?
Quebec_Abroad
Quebec158 contributions
It is easy to get to - however you can only take the train as far as Aso, from them you need to take a bus from Aso station to Kurokawa
Look on the web for the Sanko Bus portal site, and the Odan bus line to Kurokawa onsen.
The English link did not work well when we tried to book, so the owner of our guest house in Fukuoka booked the seats for us; make sure you either have a reservation number, or that somebody writes on a piece of paper your name in Japanese, as the bus driver will not speak English & might not recognize easily your name when you say it.
You can also take a bus directly from Fukuoka or from Kumamoto.
However we enjoyed the train ride & it was nice to stop in Aso for a few hours

Is there any bus and bus timing from JR Aso Station to Kurokawa?Must I reserve the bus seat in advance especially during peak period like cherry blossom period?
Is it possible to do 3 onsens namely Yamazuki to Hozantei to Kiyashik on the same day? How? Walking or is there shuttle service?
How long does the 3 onsens take?
If my bus arrive at 1030am and depart at 1630 is this possible?

Hi Gus
Check the Odan bus website for the timings, look at the 2nd bus line - Kyushu Odan bus. It is better to get a reservation, but when we tried to reserve online the site was not working so the staff at our ryokan made a phone reservation for us. However, if you do it by phone, make sure that you either have a reservation number written by the staff (ask them to do so), to that the staff writes your name in Japanese on a piece of paper - when we got to the bus, the driver had a reservation sheet all written in Japanese & we could not recognize our name, so it took a moment to get things sorted out but everything was fine.
The bus line staff at the station are helpful to explain how to pay for the bus & where to get on, but they cannot reserve a seat for you.
Have a good trip!
a.

Hi. I am looking for a ryokan that has a private outdoor onsen that's part of the room. I also have a 9 year old and would prefer a nonsmoking room. I would love to have a beautiful view as well! Any suggestions?
