Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Lovely day!! Really fun little trip on a lovely railway even though they couldn't steam because of the drought. Service was instead pulled by a lovely 1950s Dutch diesel locomotive, with the same Nederlandse Spoorwegen logo on it as today. Lovely experience all round and a lovely lunch as well! Strongly recommend as a nice attraction off the beaten track if people are interested! Can imagine great for families too.

Fantastic experience with a steam engine pulling well maintained coaches over a ride of about 30 minutes each way.The original station at Simpelveld contains a large restaurant and big souvenir shop.Such a nostalgic event.

I really like steam trains and this steam train experience was very nice. I could only wish for a longer journey!

South Limburg Steam Train Company (ZLSM), also known as the ‘Miljoenenlijn’ because of the cost of restoring it to use as a heritage line. This is a small heritage railway line being stocked by only one steam locomotive but there is also a three unit diesel railcar in use. Despite that, they actually run trains to and from Sempelveld to three other destinations including a short line over the border into Germany. We hadn’t realised – initially – that our tickets were day tickets that gave us access to the two short routes served by the diesel railcar as well as the steam-hauled route to Schin op Geul. We missed out on a short trip to Kerkrade but did enjoy both the steam hauled trip to Schin op Geul and the Diesel railcar trip to Vetschau. On the former, we were treated to waitress served drinks from the buffet car and on the latter we were given a very good running commentary from the Driver as well as short stop to take photographs of the Atlantic wall that divided Germany from Holland.
We started our visit with basic but well prepared and served snack lunches and finished with refreshments; both taken at the restaurant at Sempelford Station.
Not as large as many heritage railways, but we felt that it was well worth the €15.50 each.

We prebooked tickets online for 15 euros per person which I thought was quite steep. We arrived to complete chaos, sooooo many people on the train. We could not sit together and the trip was only 20 minutes. The online time table is incorrect. In Schin op Geul you wait for half an hour and then back again for 20 minutes. We had left too late so the kids were all totally fed up and not up for any of the other options. 5 euros would have been ok but 15 euros is really way too expensive. No one explained anything about the train, no story, nothing about the steam train, nothing about the history. Totally disappointing for my daughter's 6th birthday. Maybe better out of season but I won't try again. We took 11 people of our family so spend a lot of money.

A trip into the past. The staff play their role very well. Giving you the complete experience. We took the steam train and sat in a private cabin with 4 people. Handy if you have one or two energetic kids 😉

We had a wonderful trip on the steam train. We did not understand the time table so missed the train back. Luckily there was a diesel train that we were able to take; this was also an old train. The staff are all volunteers in the correct uniform of the time.

Even if we are not ancient train fanatics we concluded that the place is worth a visit. As we were there out of the weekend there was not any activity at the station. In a distance we saw some hangars that seemed to be open as we walked in their direction. Some people were busy renovating a locomotive from ground up, another was standing there in its full glory. That way we became a chance to ask some questions witch were patiently answered by the volunteers present. We will certainly return on a weekend to have a ride on that beautiful restored machine.

We boarded the steam train in Simpelveld and drove to Schin op Geul. This ride is a classic and a must-do.
Operated by volunteers, these trains have been in service for many years now- this is amazing.
The staff is friendly and the people are genuinely happy to show and explain everything.
Will be back.

BTW the train station in Simpelveld is amazing. Also visit brasserie Perron 4 (see my other review)

The carriages are comfortable, the station well organised and the staff are super friendly! The guards had all the time in the world to pose with the kids, even dress them up in some of their equipment. They were truly nice people.

The journey was not the most lengthy, it was fairly brief. But there was opportunity to take pictures of the train etc. once you were off.
