About
Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary is the world's first multi-species, free roaming primate sanctuary with 12 hectares of indigenous forest which is home to over 500 primates of 9 different species; Squirrel, Capuchin, Howler, Vervet and Spider monkeys, Saki, Gibbon, Ring-tailed and Black-and-white Ruffed Lemurs all enjoy the freedom to climb trees, forage amongst the undergrowth and live a life that is far removed from where they came. Ex-pets, laboratory animals and surpluses from zoos that used to live in cages now have the opportunity to behave in a way that is natural to them. Our experienced rangers will guide you on a one-hour tour of the forest, pointing out the different species whilst offering a wealth of information on their ecology and conservation. An added attraction is the 128m long suspension bridge that stretches across the forest canopy offering magnificent views of the surrounding forests.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Went there instead of the elephant sanctuary after reading such terrible reviews on it. The monkey sanctuary was a pleasant surprise. Very good guide and informative. Loads of different monkeys to see up close. Small group in the tour.

We had a fantastic time, guided by the exceptional Enrique, who was very well informed and interested. There are loads of monkeys all over the place, amazing to be so close. I loved the gibbons best of all.
NB. Wear long pants and socks, the warnings by others on trip advisor about mosquitos are to be heeded. They are merciless. If you are prepared, with appropriate clothing and mosquito repellant, it will be a fantastic experience.

Monkeyland is definitely one for the list as a must see! There are monkeys from all over the world that are being kept as they cannot go back into the wild. These monkeys come from all walks of life including zoos as well as being kept as pets. Monkeyland has become their safe space and you get to learn so much about each species. The guided tour was great fun! Do lather yourself in the mosquito repellent they provide as the mosquitos are relentless especially during summer.

Very disappointing. It was a very rainy morning. We saw very few monkeys/apes and probably only about 5 different kinds. The guide mentioned that this was because of the bad weather. Our tour ended after appr. 35 minutes (instead of being between 45 and 60 minutes) We started the tour from 10 am too late and already finished at 10.44 h. They should mention the influence of the weather or give a discount on the ticket because there is almost nothing to see.

Would highly recommend for a visit. Monkeys look very happy in a large forest area. Very knowledgable guide. Good value for money.

Not a good experience at all. My (expensive) prescription glasses were taken from my face by a vervet within 5mins of starting the tour. Yes, we were warned before starting that the monkeys do snatch stuff. But thought it one would see them come and then have an opportunity to hide your items. Going without my glasses caused major issues for me the remainder of the holiday. Perhaps Monkeyland must make the warnings more explicit and issue straps for glasses?
We were also bitten severely by mosquitoes.
We will not ever return again.

What a great place to visit. Your entrance fee of GBP£16 provides a guided 1 hour tour of the sanctuary where loads of monkeys have free reign. You walk through the forest feet away from monkeys on the footpath and in the trees. Gibbons, Howlers and plenty of Lemurs to take pictures of. Great place for kids to learn about wildlife in a "real" world environment.

Monkey land is a fascinating place to visit. It is a free roaming primate sanctuary. We had a private tour and it was wonderful to see them roam around on the ground and be on the trees. We saw many primates of various species.
The birds of Eden is next door - also worth a visit.

Enjoyed this tour and seeing the animals up close. They appear to be committed to improving the lives of the animals and not exploiting them. Loved the lemurs. Guide was very knowledgeable and willing to answer questions

This was fun – just make sure there’s no monkey in the tree above you! 😊 The guide was so friendly and knowledgeable. It was very low-key – just walking around with the monkeys and lemurs running here and there. Would be really fun with kids.

Hi there. Could you please advise what time does the tour start? Is it every hour? So that we can plan our visit accordingly without long wait. Thank you.

Hi. I very much want to go to Monkeyland:however I am disabled in that I cannot walk long distances. I will bring a cane with a seat to rest on when I tire. Is this suitable for me? Thanks in advance,.

It's totally suitable. You only need to walk 20m into the bush to be surrounded by monkeys. Very flat and easy terrain to walk through.

Hi, we will be visiting in January with our then almost two-year-old son. Do I have to go on a tour? Don't know if a two year old will/can/wants to stick to a schedule lol. Can we move around freely, maybe after the tour? Cheers :)

Hi. Unfortunately the only way to move through the forest is on a guided tour. The reason is the monkeys can be naughty and with the guides presence they know they may not make trouble. Also there is quite a big hang bridge which is exciting but the guide needs to be present. We had a two year old boy on our tour and he was so amazed by all the monkeys that he was in his element, so I don't think you'll have any trouble. You can also move freely on your own around the restaurant area and there are monkeys around that area too. I hope you guys enjoy it! We have been 3 times already!

We where there for around 90 mins including guided tour which started as soon as we arrived. We spent a little time in the curio shop as well. If you the 3 ticket saving for birds of Eden and Jukani you can easily do them all in one day as they are not far apart.

Hi planning a visit in September - are the Mosquitoes still bad that time of year?

My name is Vijver and I am the Social Media Manager of Monkeyland. Yes there will be mosquito's we have them year round, sometimes are worse than others. We have free mosquito repellent on the desk where you purchase your entry tickets. On days that the mozzies are very bad you will be offered some before you enter the forest as well. The best is to come prepared by wearing long sleeves and pants.

No - turn turn up and join the next available tour. They run regularly and you can go into the cafe and have something to drink/eat while you are waiting. Don't let the monkeys steal your beer though - they are very cute but also very naughty.
