I think this might be a case of failed expectations given the glowing reviews found elsewhere on this site and in Lonely Planet, but this was just ho hum to us. Especially given the crowds of people present and that we visited some amazing ruins elsewhere in Ireland that we had completely to ourselves and complete access to which really... more

Glendalough is a lovely place to get to as well as an enjoyable place to visit. Lovely place to walk along the lake, or sit on the grass and enjoy the sunshine. If the weather is good when you're going drive through the mountains around the Sally Gap. Amazing views. And stop for food in the Wicklow Heather restaurant which... more

To tour the grounds is free. My husband and I walked the beautiful short path along the river to the monastic settlement. I had a guide book with me and just reading about the settlement and the history of the ruins was amazing. You could just image what it looked like. The cemetary around the ruins was also very old... more

This place was and still remains my favourite place in Ireland (no on earth) - Glendalough, I've been here countless times but its magic never fails to enchant me. It is as close to heaven as one can get. Just 40km of so south of Dublin city in Co. Wicklow, it is a bastion of mystical Ireland set amongst the... more

We toured Glendalough with Wicklow Tours Unplugged and were set free to walk around the monastary, cemetary and two lakes. Stunningly beautiful...the kids and the adults were amazed. more

We were really only looking for a restroom on our way through the Wicklow mountains, so we stopped at the visitors center here. We were somehow coralled into a tour, and I am so happy that we were. I am so happy we made time for this. The ruins and the history of St Kevin was great. The tour guide... more

Even in freezing weather this was really special. A beautiful place to wander for an hour or two; free admission too. more

If your trip to Ireland takes you only to Dublin I highly suggest getting out of the city for a day. Just half an hour south of Dublin (unless you get lost as we did!) lies Glendalough, in the heart of the Wicklow Mountains. Glendalough was founded in the 6th century by St. Kevin, a hermit priest, but soon others... more

Glendalough is one of those "must see" sites in Ireland, and it lived up to every one of my expectations. There’s a dramatic effect when you can see glimpses of the monastic settlement through the trees as you walk the path toward it. And then, crossing a wooden bridge over the proverbial babbling brook, there it is. The round tower,... more

This is a wonderful spiritual place to visit. We were recommended the snack van at the entrance to the monastery for tea and we certainly found it delicious and very reasonably priced too. Prepare in advance and you can book accommodation on or near the site which must be great. Allow yourself plenty of time to take the nature walks... more
