In fact, another section of Acadia, the Schoodic section, has a more amazing stretch of sea meets rocks (about 30 by car from Bar Harbor). With both ThunderHole and Schoodic Point, when you go makes all the difference. Generally speaking, it's better at mid-tide than at either low or high tide. And how high the surf is (the breakers are... more

We have been to Thunder Hole many times and the intensity of the waves depends entirely on the conditions out at sea. Sometimes the "show" is spectacular, with crashing waves booming against the narrow channel formed by the granite; at other times, the ocean is calm. This is because the ocean, unlike a lake, is subject to tides, with high... more

After reading tips on tripadvisor and going to the visitors center my husband and I got to thunder hole 2 1/2 hours before high tide and sat near there and had a nice picnic lunch. We got there early to make sure we didn't miss anything. We waited until high tide and we didn't see or hear anything. Water spashed... more

The first time we went there , we reached around high tide. It did not seem remarkable at all. We were then advised to come two hours before high tide the following day and it was totally different. The water was not blowing up 30 feet into the air as seen in pictures buit it was still awesome to see... more

Stopped at Thunder Hole the day after a storm. The rock was wet and slippery! My husband slipped and broke his ankle. The good news is that Bar Harbor has a good hospital with a wonderful orthopedic surgeon and a Great Search and Rescue Team. I took my teenage children back (while my husband was recuperating in the hospital) on... more

I am not sure how this could be rated unremarkabale because it is fanscinating to watch the water and although it may get crowded there is pleasant of area for visitors. If one is going to a National Park natural wonders should be what you expect to see. more

If I had gone at just the right time, I guess I might have seen more. There would probably have been more people there though, and there were quite enough as it was. If you miss this, don't fret. more

This is mainly a tourist attraction. But, it is worth a quick stop. When I was there, it was making thunder and was spurting up a little bit. But, I am sure it would be cool to see it when water is spurting 30 feet into the air! The best times are 2 hours before high tide or during a... more
