We drove around the Park Loop Road. The road is one-way, so you can take your time. It's big enough, that many times we were the only ones on the road. Many places to go off the road, and to stop along the way. It's a beautiful drive. more

Guide books fail to adequately describe the beauty especially in the Fall of this 27 mile drive. We especially loved pulling off to the observation areas, many with stone benches allowing us to savor the sites many with views of Frenchman's Bay heading out to the open sea. A national treasure!! more

This one-way road along the rugged shore of Mount Desert Island offers dramatic views of the rock-bound coast and the sea beyond. It is fun to pull into the parking lane and walk out on the ledges overlooking the ocean and watch the lobsterfolk at work, the gulls circling and crying, the waves crashing on the shore and the tour... more

Driving the loop road is like being given the keys to the sweet shop! The drive is pretty amazing itself, but it's the way that it links up so many great views, beaches, lakes, look out and trailheads that makes this so worth doing. We were stopping the car every two minutes to look at something. It makes getting the... more

I often wonder how people can backpack their earthly belongings and sit on a rock, to meditate, and somehow I am sorry I didn't while visiting this incredible treasure. It is definitely worth the ride to see this park, I am sorry I did not take the carriage tour, I received wrong informaton that it was not in service the... more

This road is a great way to see the park and take in some beautiful scenery! My husband and I made the loop at least two times. There are so many pretty places to get out of the car and see pretty scenery! more

The Park Loop Road offers beautiful views of the Maine coast. I've done this trip twice. The first time in 2004 was an overcast, foggy day, but that created some haunting beauty. The second time in 2009 was a beautiful sunny day and I was able to see the coast in a completely different way. The best part of the... more

Our innkeeper loaned us a copy of the cd of the park tour. It was helpful and informative, but we mostly had fun just soaking in the gorgeous scenery along the drive.Somewhere near Thunder Hole there is a pull off (not named) near a stone bridge. Cross the road to the water side and you will see a set of... more

I would agree that it does not compare to the vistas out west, but... you are comparing apples to oranges. As luck would have it, we were there during the most recent storms. Drove the sea coast drive and went to the top of Cadillac Mt and could not see 2 car lengths in front of us! :) THAT was... more

My teenagers and I did 26-mile Park Loop Road on a cloudy day--very enjoyable! Half of the Loop is one-way, so once you start, you're committed. Sand Beach is ocean swimming -- always cold (Echo Park Lake--in the Park, not on the loop--has warmer, non-salt water swimming). Ask your hotel about tide times because it is so worth going at... more
