We could see a sand storm in the distance as we approached Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes which are located in central Death Valley near Stovepipe Wells, access is from Hwy. 190 or from the unpaved Sand Dunes Road. Although the highest dune rises only about 100 feet, the dunes actually cover a large area. Best seen when the sun casts... More

This is a must do on your stops in Death Valley. You do not have to hike all the way to them to appreciate the beauty. We only spent about a half hour here in the morning around 9 am. Hiked in a short ways and quickly saw the tracks left by the many residents. Morning shadows made for some... More

Take lots of water and enjoy climbing up and down the dunes. We spent about an hour here and got halfway to the big dunes, we did see some make it all the way but you'll need water and do it on a cooler day, not the middday sun. More

Theses dunes a just outside Stovepipe Wells on the way to Furnace Creeke and just off the highway. A short walk brings you to the start and they grow larger as you walk further into them. The photography is best in the morning or mid to late afternoon when the shadows are bet defined and show the contours of the... More

This is an awesome place, like little Sahara. While you drive from Furnace Creek to Stovepipes Well, it's literally around one corner when you suddenly see all the dunes in front of you in the distance. Dunes themselves are pretty big, with the sand sometimes as rough as sandpaper, sometimes as smooth as flour. You can walk them for an... More

The dunes were a great place to be at dawn. In late November, it was still a little chilly when I started the hike but was warm by the time I finished at 8am. Getting to the top of the highest dunes (more than 100 ft.) was a workout. My sneakers were filled with sand when I got back to... More

These sand dunes were the highlight of the trip. death Valley has another area of sand dunes which raise 7X higher than these, but they are about 2.5 hours from where we were spending most of our time...so too far to go on gravel drives. The Mesquite dunes were impressive. We were there in the afternoon and could see the... More

These dunes are the best known and easiest to visit in the national park. Located in central Death Valley near Stovepipe Wells, access is from Hwy. 190 Although the highest dune rises only about 100 feet, the dunes actually cover a vast area. They can be accessed from the road side car park, and are only 3 mins walk from... More

Went out to the dunes right before sunset and stayed to photograph the sunset on the dunes and there was a full moon that night so we waited for moon to come up. Was beautiful with all different types of light on the dunes. Its usually pretty windy in Death Valley and our nalgene water bottles got seriously sandblasted! I... More

Simple premise. Tall, 100+ feet sand dunes in the middle of a valley. Although they're in the middle of a large desert, they still seem out of place. And if the wind pushes them around and they actually do constantly change shapes, how come they're only in one spot and always stay there? The answer: Who cares? They're fun! Take... More
