Grinnell Glacier is one of the many hikes available in Glacier National Park. It is an all day hike for those of average ability but can be made shorter by taking a boat across Lake Josephine. It is well worth the effort. We hiked the trail on the first day it was opened, in mid July, so don't plan on... more

One of our three hikes during our time at Glacier in late June. Rising over 1200 feet, it's one of the bigger hikes in Glacier National Park, but the incline is fairly gradual. The first mile takes you through the woods past lakes. If you're thinking of taking the boat across the lake, it will cost $13. We continued on... more

It's the smallest glacier in the park, but probably the only one you need to visit. The glacier can be reached after a 6 mile (9.6 km) hike from a trailhead beginning at Swiftcurrent Lake. If you don't take this hike you'll miss the entire park. This is the best hike my wife and I went on and it's worth... more

8/21/2009: I took the naturalist lead hike that included the hiker’s express boat rides across Swiftcurrent Lake and Lake Josephine (boat departs at 8:30 from the Many Glacier Lodge dock). Great views all the way along this trial in all directions. Also a lot of wildlife viewing; I saw black bear, a lot of big horn sheep, marmots, squirrels, butterflies... more

We did the Ranger led Grinnell Glacier Hike in the first week of July 2009. We met the ranger and our fellow hikers at the parking lot on the other side of the lake than the lodge. There is a trail head here saying Grinnell Glacier and also Swiftcurrrent nature trail. The trail begins at the parking lot and then... more

During my first trip to Glacier in early July 2006, we hiked the Grinnell Glacier Trail but were only able to hike about 2.5 miles of the trail from Lake Josephine due to snow cover. During my second trip to Glacier in late July/early August 2008, we were able to hike the trail in its entirety. The most popular way... more

What a spectacular place! A variety of hikes available. If you can't make it to the glacier you can take a boat or hike it. Problem with the boat is it is a first come first serve basis. Priority goes to those who have prepaid. Shorter hikes at easy level if you don't want to hike to the glacier, you... more

After going thru and around the park for years between Havre, Great Falls and Kalispell, Whitefish; I am now committed to hiking each time I go back to the State before I'm too old to hike. The weather was a bit hot but tolerable. We saw a griz and her two cubs, climbed onto the Glacier after fording two little... more
