Located on the South Rim, a stone's throw from the El Tovar Hotel and Hopi House, this is a combination visitors center with historical info and gift shop. Originally built by Ohioan John George Verkamp, who sold Native American crafts and souvenirs, the two-story shingled building is a "modified Mission" style, resembling an adobe building in form but not materials.... Verkamp's is a small visitor center on the South Rim, right near El Tovar, that has great information on the arrival of modern-day people to develop tourism at the Grand Canyon. Verkamp's is a new Grand Canyon Visitor Center, located right on the rim at the east end of the main South Rim village. There is another South Rim Visitor Center located farther east, at the Grand Canyon Information Plaza. Verkamp's is a busy Visitor Center with a medium-sized souvenir shop and a small information display area. More
