The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was one reason why we wanted to visit the Big Island and we were not disappointed. Although Kilaua is not an explosive volcano it is a great way to experience a volcanic area safely.
We did the special 8mile walk one day (this is only run every 6 weeks or so) as well as visiting...

We fully enjoyed our day at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park -- you could probably spend more than one exploring here! But it is possible to check out some of the main attractions, Chain of Craters Road, and the crater at night -- all in one day.
We arrived at the park at about 9:30 (after stopping to grab sandwiches for...

Not being an avid fan of lava or volcanoes, I did not know what to expect at the park. We took the Kilauea Iki trail along the rain forest above and then down into the still-steaming caldera. Just spectacular! A relatively gentle zigzag back up, going through the Thurston Lava tubes as well. This tube is interesting, but not as...

A Must Visit in the "Big" Island of Hawaii. Just imagine standing near an active volcano!

make sure to see the lava tube, the steam vents, the sulphur banks trail and devil's throat (a collapsed crater that is pretty scary b/c you can walk right up to it... you can find info on it in andrew doughty's guide book since the NP map doesn't show it).
and definitely go to the bottom of chain of craters...

Everything about The Big Island was wonderful, and the hike around the rim of the crater and through the floor of the volcano at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was the best! The magnificence of the lava flow is spellbinding. Nature is a force beyond our understanding. "And what is man that Thou art mindful of him?" Psalm 8:4

An absolute must if visiting the Big Island of Hawaii. Do not make the mistake that we did and expect to see the volcano area in less than a full day. We arrived at the volcano visitor center around 1:00 pm. It was raining off and on when we arrived and remained that way all afternoon. This was not totally...

We have been to the park several times since our first visit with three small boys in 1976.
It's always a wonder ! Wish the management of Volcano House would make some progress with the renovation - once was a fine place to view the crater over a meal. Park personnel at the visitor center are very friendly and helpful....

Really enjoyed our tour of this park. Learned a lot and saw more beautiful scenery that was different than other areas we toured.
