In June 2006, my wife and I, and our two small children stopped here very early (around 6:30am) en route to Yellowstone N.P. from Mandan, N.D. This stop was just what I needed. As a Minnesotan (and former Montana resident) who makes the trek west to visit parents and siblings at least once a year, I have visited the Painted Canyon in TRNP on every trip (coming and going). A really, nice and easy stop just off Interstate 94 to see a good overlook of the Badlands. If you have the time, definitely tour either the North or South Unit of the Park to get even better up close views of the North Dakota Badlands. If you don't have time, then definitely stop at the Painted Canyon Visitor's Center... more
