This stop is on your way into the park if you take one entrance, and it is worth a quick stop. The mesa looks like a checkerboard due to the horizontal and vertical lines etched into it over time and forces of nature. It will take you less than five minutes for a quick stop and photo opportunity. more

This is a neat rock formation near the east enterence of the park. It is not far from the fee station inside the park. You can easily see it from an overlook. A sign there explains how the vertical and horizontal cracks formed which make it look like a checkerboard. Worth a quick stop! more
