As the post below said the road is still out to the main parking lot wich makes the climb a lot harder than it would otherwise be. While the climb was difficult in parts you should not be scared away. I climbed it with family members, including a nine year old. Even though I an somewhat out of shape it... more

The volcano hike was a breathtaking experience, but be warned -- it's not as easy as the older posts may suggest. The road leading to the main parking lot was destroyed by a landslide in late 2004, so you have to park in a smaller lot further down, which adds about 30min hike each way on an older colonial road... more

We also ignored the "access interdite" sign (along with most of the other hikers there) at the top and were able to get right to the edge where the steam was coming out. Spectacular! The sulphur smell wasn't that bad. I saw a hiker (I think he was German) dip his water bottle into one of the pools where the... more

Climbing La Soufriere(Guadeloupe`s live volcano) is one of the things you absolutely should not miss while you're in Guadeloupe [along with hiking to the Chutes du Carbet, snorkeling at Grand Anse and Caravelle Beach (straight out from Club Med), and eating cocoanut icecream made by sidewalk vendors and accras, the Creole fish fritter available everywhere].
