Informative tour detailing the Mavis Bank Factory's role in producing the famous Blue Mountain coffee Jamaica is known for. Mr. Pendergrass had valuable experience and insight into each phase of production and it was illuminating to consider the amount of labor that goes into a cup of coffee. Which, by the way, we got to enjoy at the tour's end!

Drove up to the Blue Mountain Coffee factory, and it is not a ride for the faint hearted. But the views are to die for, and the coffee factory is a pleasant experience.

We went without notice to Mavis Banks Coffee Factory in February 2017 , it was on a Friday and it was just lunchtime (12:00- 13:00) At lunchtime everyone at MBCF is having lunch- exept our guide Denton (sorry for that, Denton ;) )
The tours takes place, if there are interested people, who want to make this tour.
Just ask the security staff at the entrance.
Before we could start our tour, we had to fill a form with questions about our health status. We had to take our jewelry off, even earrings and we had to wear closed shoes. This is because the factory works according to high standards of hygiene.
After fill in the form, we were brought to the little Coffee-Shop, where we could buy coffee. We also got a coffee for free, which we quickly drift, since the guide was already waiting. We didn't find it nice, that the coffee was served in styrofoam cups. They could offer ceramic mugs with Mavis-Banks-print or similar, which could be sold in the shop also.
Our guide Denton explained to us the whole process from the coffee bean seeds to the packing of the roasted coffee as he led us to the places. Unfortunately, we got the wrong time. The production stood- on the one side because of the lunch break and on the other hand, from Friday noon, only the roasted coffee is packed. This is because the production stands still on weekends.
Anyway- we found the tour was very interesting and worth the price of 10 USD or 1000 JAD. It's allowed to take photos.
We definately have to come back- another day, another time.
See you there- Denton :D

We had been travelling around Jamaica and had 4 days in Kingston. We had planned to do a hike up Blue Mountain but had not realised we needed to book this in advance. I was also not fit to do a walk.Went to Kingston Tourist Office and met an officer called O'Neill. He very helpfully put us in touch with a company who were very amenable to our itenary and we negotiated a very fair price. Compnay was called Gadgepro and the driver was a lovely man called Elsworth Eugene Nugent. Eugene drove us up the Blue Mountain to see the Mavis Bank Factory. He negotiated cost of tour with Factory. I was not suitable dressed but factory obliged with overalls etc to cover up. throughly enjoyed tour - really informative and you are given a coffee whilst waiting. The journey up the mountain is pretty exciting also -really scary roads and amazing views. Loved it.

This factory was recommended as having all the aspects of coffee processing available however despite the friendly tour guide who said he has spent the last forty years at the factory's best effort, the tour fell well short. It must have been conceptualized forty years ago and hasn't changed. The first impression on arrival was given by a security guard who couldn't say whether they were having tours that day. She proceeded to spend five minutes on the tempo hone trying to determine whether or not tours would occur. This after having called the day before and assured of a ten o'clock tour. The tour starts at a gazebo where you are asked if you would be purchasing coffee. This was because it would take some time to get the coffee after the tour according to a staff member. The essence of the tour was a wiz around a couple of rooms and machines, offering no background on coffee such as the history, or even some background on the estate. There was great emphasis on some rules which included a dress code which is not present one he website. Don't turn up in sandals, shorts or spaghetti straps. Whilst the guest is made to wear hair nets lab coat, remove all jewelry, the tour guide wondered around dressed normally. The disappointment was made up by a visit to craighton estate on the other side of the mountain which redeemed the blue mountain coffee experience

If you are a coffee buff, you get to see where the famous Jablum JAmican BLUe Mountain (hence the acronym) is produced. If you are not a coffee buff, the experience is a little dry shall we say.
The 'tour' (it's more of an inspection) lasted all of a mere 10 minutes (yes...10).
One is shown sacks of coffee, a handful of machines and a room of people furiously picking through beans in order to remove those beans, which have been split or damaged by a specific type of weevil. That's about all.
If you are in pursuit of a tour rather than an extremely brief factory inspection, I would recommend Twyman's Old Tavern Coffee Estate, where there is more of a tour experience to be had, together with a chance to meet the proprietary family, who run the estate.
As a foot note: the 'tour' cost $USD 10 ($JAM 10,000), which I had hoped could be used as a discount from a bag of coffee, which I would have been delighted to buy had there been an 8oz bag of the 'Gold' variety in stock. Alas, the tour price does not count towards the purchase. Perhaps the owners might revise this policy?

Found this factory while I was wandering through the Blue Mountains. After I paid the entrance fee I got a sample of the coffee and due to I was the only visitor a private tour. It was very interesting to see how this factory produces one of the world most expencsive coffees. You will see all steps, from roasting to packing and the warehouse.

We visited on a really quiet day so the two of us took the tour.We were given a cup of the best tasting coffee ever before we started. It was fascinating to see the entire process of coffee making. The factory was small and had different sections and we got to see them all from the coffee beans being dried outside, to the making up of the barrels used to transport the coffee right through to the team of women who work in quality control. The machines themselves seemed uncomplicated but the quality control was immense. We finished in the cupping room where we were shown how a team of experts taste the coffee to ensure it meets their standards before export/sale. We were told that more plants were being planted so in about two years the landscape around the factory itself will have changed. i would love to go back and would recommend a visit as well as the purchase of as much Blue Mountain coffee as you can carry.

I'd always been curious about how coffee was really processed, and this tour provided the answer. There were just five people in our group, so there was plenty of opportunity to ask questions, which were answered helpfully. The factory is quite small, and was quiet on the day we visited, but we got a sense of how busy it could get in the main harvest season. And we had a great cup of coffee thrown in for the relatively modest tour price.

Bonjour
Taxi....
Merci pour votre retour
Cordialement
Maguy
