St Pierre was one of the highlights of our trip to Martinique. It's an old-fashioned town with tons of history. We walked around, got icecream at an chic little cafe, shopped for spices on the beach promenade, visited the old theater (destroyed by the volcanic eruption), and visited the jailcelll where the only survivor of the eruption ( a prisoner)... Mount Pelee was very charming the hike was muddy and I was somwhat scared to look down because of the height but overall was an exquisite adventure. St. Pierre is full of history and I had never been so close to a volcano ever in my life. The smell of salt from the ocean was wonderful. I cant believe that... More

I spent almost 10 months living in Martinique. St. Pierre was one of my favorite places to visit. It's a definite MUST SEE for anyone who loves historical aspects of travel/tourism. Be sure to travel up the mountain and stop to see the largest tree there. It's supposedly the only one that survived the eruption. You can't miss it. It's... More

The town is charming as it exists today. Ruins from the destruction by the volcanic eruption can be visited. I would hardly call it morbid interest, no more than that of Pompeii. Grand structures were destroyed as well as everything else and Fort de France became the most important city as a result More
