Did a daytrip to Port St Pierre whilst stopping at Martinique in 1994. Have studied the 1902 eruption in depth and did not expect to see such an awesome sight as Mt Pelee. I spent almost 10 months living in Martinique. St. Pierre was one of my favorite places to visit. It's a definite MUST SEE for anyone who loves historical aspects of travel/tourism. Be sure to travel up the mountain and stop to see the largest tree there. It's supposedly the only one that survived the eruption. You can't miss it. It's... more
The town is charming as it exists today. Ruins from the destruction by the volcanic eruption can be visited. I would hardly call it morbid interest, no more than that of Pompeii.
