From San Cristobal de las Casas Cathedral Square with the big cross, arrange to take a collectivo with a guide (Cesar) to Chamula and Zinacantan to see the descendants of the Mayans with their religious and culture differences. During Easter week was able to observe the religious leaders parade with drums and firecrackers. Also went to the churches, markets and... More

If you have a spare half day in San Cristobal, be sure to visit San Juan Chamula. It was one of the most interesting excursions I've undertaken in Mexico and provides a fascinating insight into a unique hybrid culture of Mayan and catholic traditions. For an amazing 5 hour tour, head to the square with the big wooden cross in... More

This was one of my favorite stops on our road trip through Chiapas for Christmas and New Years. We were there right around New Years 2010. As soon as we got to this village I knew I was in for a treat. Tzotzil commerce everywhere , if you like shopping for textiles you will be pleased with the selection here.This... More

You gotta go there, the communities are spectacular, it is like traveling in the past, where no civilization exists. Awesome culture, but be careful, you cannot take pictures in this litlle town. The police can take you to jail if you take a picture or video. Visit their church and the museum. More

After a two week trip through Chiapas and Oaxaca, we're still talking about the church in Chamula. Take a guided tour, you will be more well received and actually learn about the religious practices going on here. Indigenous persons sacrificing chickens, drinking moon shine, and chanting to deities inside this church make it unforgettable. More

Probably the most interesting attraction during our trip around Yucatan and Chiapas. We got an organised trip from Le Git del Sol in San Cristobal with a very good guide called Ricardo. You cannot take pictures of people in Chamula but this makes it somehow less touristic. We were lucky to see some processions and people praying in the church... More

San Juan Chamula is a town of indigenous people in an autonomous region of Mexico. The people don't like strangers, photography is basically forbidden and the people are suspicious and aggressive. The black clothed 'police' will quickly confiscate cameras. Outsiders can visit San Juan Chamula, but there is a sign forbidding photography in the church. I saw a woman assault... More
