We went to the Refugio as part of our Ixtapa Adventours tour to Barra de Potosi'. We had an excellent guide (Javier) who walked us through Refugio and told us alot about all the animals. The exhibits were spacious and clean for the animals, which is of outmost importance. Many of the animals were injured or former pets that wouldn't... More

We went to the refuge as part of Adventours' Adventure in Potosi. I was most surprised by the variety of birds they were caring for: parrots, hawks, eagles, and a pigmy owl. This wasn't like a zoo where you were blocked off from really experiencing the animals up-close. But it was safe and obvious that the animals were treated with... More

Near the beach at Barra is an awesome wildlife refuge that features animals from the region, such as coatimundi. My 8-year old son loved to learn about and handle some of these creatures, including baby crocodile and armadillo, boa constrictor, and porcupine. You'll want to bring a sun hat, binoculars, camera, and walking shoes. We were staying in the area... More

if you walk more than 15 minutes the tourists fade away and you have about 25 miles of beach to walk! Lots of pelicans, and other birds. Kayaking is fun too More

Stroll at your own pace and see animals you have never seen before. Get up close and personal with (through glass) with scorpions, spiders, iguanas, and other small critters of the area. The guides taking you through speak great English and know their stuff. Good time for kids as well as adults. More

I'd been planning a visit via the bus + "chicken truck" route from Zihua, but then ended up taking a tour (with Luis at ixtapatoursluis.com) that included the refuge, a mangrove boat ride, and lunch in Barra de Potosi. Our group really enjoyed this small refuge visit - the guide was very knowledgable. They have several endangered Military Macaws that... More

We thoroughly enjoyed our excursion to El Refugio de Potosi. It was a great way to learn more about the coast of Mexico and the animals who are indigenous to the area. Our English-speaking guide was enthusiastic and informative. I encourage all visitors to Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa to take a short ride to El Refugio to learn more about this beautiful part... More
