Tula is well worth visiting and has some great features. You need to see the Atlantes on top of pyramid b and the stellae behind it as well. The 'wall of snakes' is awesome and the ball-courts are both worth seeing.
We entered through the side door that was much closer to the pyramids. There is also a little museum...

If you're driving, the approach to the archaeological site -- at least the way we came -- is frustratingly slow and unattractive, as you have to drive through the town.
