The Basilica de la Soledad is a peaceful retreat from the hubbub of the city. Inside one can find the patron saint of Oaxaca, the Virgin of Soledad. There is a little museum next door which is fun to visit as well. On the plaza before entering the basilica are ice cream stands that sell nieves in all different flavors.... More

The basilica is well maintained. It is also a cultural center. There is a thriving street food scene around the basilica. More

surrounded by two very large court yards. In one at 8am every weekday morning the municipal police meet to start their day with a marching band and receive their orders. Fun to watch. More

Linda give a tour of the Cathedral and Soledad on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 10 a.m. It leaves from in front of the Cathedral in the Zocalo. More

Love Solidad- she is gorgeous. This is also the church for los indios. Attend a mass here, eat food in the plaza and buy a dress Frida would love. More

We were able to participate in the Calenda for the Virgin de la Soledad and it was quite the experience -- don't miss if you can possibly participate. More

A beautiful Spanish-colonial church dedicated to Nuestra Senora de la Soledad, the patroness of the city of Oaxaca. The Basilica of Solitude (Soledad) is a very important church. The virgin appeared here in early colonial times and the church was built in the late 1600s to honor the vision. It is beautiful and very solid as are many churches in Mexico and so built to hinder damage from earthquakes. The church sits a few blocks to the west... More
