The Pueblos Malcomunados are well worth a visit, set high in the Sierra the views are breath taking. The accommodation offered in these villages is clean, simple but great value. The hikes were a little bit more rigorous that expected but if you're fit and can handle large descents they're worth it! More

Spent a wonderful couple of nights in a comfortable cabin in Benito Juarez. Would have loved to have walked along the trails taking in a couple of villages but had two young children so decided not to push ourselves too hard. There are some great local walks that we did in the area with spectacular views, it is a beautiful... More

These villages are wonderful if you need some time interacting with nature outside the bustle of the city. The villages are very tiny (Llano Grande has a population of 200 people!) but they are very welcoming to tourists. You can see beautiful views of the mountains and it's very quiet. There are also cabins where you can stay overnight, which... More

Only spent a day there two years ago but one of these years I would love to spend at least a few nights. The cabins were cozy and the landscape surrounding breathtaking. The activities offered would be great fun. A responsible way to travel and get off the beaten track. More

Exhilarating and Exhausting We spent three days hiking in the Sierra Norte, booked through Expediciones Sierra Norte. It was a wonderful experience not to be missed if you have the temperament and stamina for it. Not only do you see outstanding landscapes and glimpse the lifestyle of the people in the mountains, you also provide economic support for this undeveloped... More

We booked a two-day, one-night package with Expediciones Sierra Norte to Llano Grande for early February at their Oaxaca office. We were interested in getting up into the mountains, seeing a different ecosystem, and doing some birding, so we arranged the trip with the English-speaking woman in the office, who was very helpful. Thanks to some of the earlier reviews,... More

We stayed one night at the cabin in Cuajimoloyas. Fantastic. 10k feet in the air, so cool at night (I'm told it snows sometimes). Great hike through the woods with the guide (I have no idea how you could find your way without a guide) and he was happy to explain stuff as we went. More

we did the latuvi-lachatao hike, 2 days. 2nd day is way prettier, along the river. it's not an easy walk but nor is it that hard. accom was fantastic as were the included meals - but the guides need a bit more training in guiding tourists, ie stopping for photo ops and even breaks. it seemed to me they were... We decided to spend one night/2 days in the Sierra Norte with http://www.sierranorte.org.mx/home/index.php We had a great time - we saw a totally different way of life in the small villages outside the city, and the walks themselves were great with some excellent views. We went to Llano Grande on the early morning bus, walked 16k before lunch and were... More
