We scheduled a tour to Celestun through our hotel on Turitransmerida; we were picked up on-time at our hour in a full size bus for the trip. The guide was pleasant and fun, but we missed some of his best humor which was in Spanish. On arrival in Celestun, we boarded 4 different 6 seat boats. Ours had engine trouble... More

We visited Celestun on a small day tour from Merida. We were so fortunate to be there when the flamingos were feeding. They migrate there in very large numbers for a few months a year to feed on the brine shrimp. It is the shrimp that give them their pink color. I have never seen such brilliantly hued flamingos! The... More

The two hour trip that seemed never ending was SO!!! worth it. We took a boat out with the guides right at the entrance to the town. I had read a lot about where to get a boat and the costs and decided not to go into the town and then get a boat. Our guide was very knowledgeable and... More

Do not take for granted that you will see any flamingos there. Below a description of our boat trip during Semana Santa. You do not really have to be bothered if you find a boat as immediately after you entered the beach you are approached by hawkers or you will hear the screams "Flamencos!". To be fair they give you... More

When we got to Celestun to look at the flamingos we were approached by a guy on a 3 wheeled motorcycle who said he would take us to see them for 15 dollars. We knew the conventional boat ride was 60 dollars, so we took the motorcycle. It was far more interesting that way. It was just a few miles... More

I had always wanted to see the flamingos and Celestun and it did not disappoint. We saw thousands of birds and they color was brighter than we are used to seeing. The two hour trip was amazing - going to the mouth of where the sea enters from the river. We saw lots of flamingos on the way there but... More

Celestun is about 90 km SW of Merida. You can drive there or take a bus or hire a tour service. Wear you bathing suit and bring a towel and bug spray. After you arrive, hire a boat (holds 6 people) and the driver will take you out on the lagoon fairly close to the flamingos. Then he'll cut the... More

The first time we went it had rained and the water level was high so the flamingos were not there. We had a wonderful guide who showed us many types of birds and explained the various plant life. The guides hired at the enterance, are not paid for the service, they count on tips to survive! We went back when... More
