This is one of the greatest central plazas in all of Mexico. It is large, colorful, full of trees and benches, and surrounded by much to see. If you spend any time in Merida, you ought to see the central square - the Zocalo, or Plaza Grande. It is the essence of Merida. All four sides of the square have historic buildings that mark the origins & development of Merida. The cathederal is the oldest in mainland America, though a bit austere in appearance. My daughters and I spent two nights in the central part of the city to experience the cultural activities of the Plaza grande on Sunday when streets are closed to traffic.
