The Citadel sits high on a hill overlooking the harbour. It is true that you can walk around outside for free, but you will miss a lot. Volunteers lead 45 minute guided tours. Our guide was so interesting and our group asked so many questions, it lasted an hour and a half. The tours really bring this place to life,... more

This is an ok site if you have never seen another fortress or castle before. If you're coming from the UK, this will not impress as it's only half as old as your castles over there. If you have been or will be going to Louisbourg during your stay in Nova Scotia, skip the Citadel. The staff here are only... more

The Citadel offers a chance to learn more about Canada's military history and its role in past and present miltary conflicts. The best way to learn about the fort is to join one of the guided tours, that can give you some extra insight and detail regarding some of the fort features and displays. You'll learn a far greater deal... more

A short walk up the hill and you'll be amazed. You actually can't see the castle at all so we were rather suprised when we entered not actually knowing what the citadel was but as everyone else was going in we paid to enter too. Some fantastic views of the city and at 12.00 they fire the canon. The tour... more

A must when visiting Halifax. Well worth the price. The guided tour is a must, the guides have a lot of background knowledge. Staff (dressed in authentic clothing/uniforms) is easily available to answer any questions you might have. more

This place is probably the top tourist attraction in Halifax and well worth a couple of hours. Be forewarned, if you're walking, it's a good hike up there. Well, it was a fortress so it's on high ground. You can just wander around the grounds and up around the battlements, or they have tours. There are two separate film presentations... more

The Citadel is a nice fort on a great site overlooking the city. It is a nice place to explore for a few hours, assuming the weather is nice. The museum was well done, but exhibits were a bit boring after a while. I would not plan to spend more than a few hours here. more

The Halifax Citadel is a National Historic Site of Canada. It does show; in fact, the Citadel represents a definitive example of how a nation can best preserve its' historical heritage. And interesting enough, Halifax is not one of Canada's oldest cities (Take a bow Montreal,) Once the command post of British rule in the province, and an overwhelming presence... more

February is a time of the year when only the grounds of the Citadel are open. However, we found it interesting to walk up to the site, tour it, see the Old Town Clock, pass by the barracks and, most of all, see the gun-firing at noon! We were very close and a man organising the whole manoeuvre talked to... more
