Roque Saint-Christophe is well worth a visit. We spent two hours exploring the troglodite village. There were working models of equipment such as that used to move large rocks, and haul water up from the river below. This fascinated the children. More

Great interactive re-enactments of what it would be like to live along this valley in ancient times, defending the fortress, survivng on local produce, inventing new tools to handle the work. It was very easy to let the imaginations go back a few milleniums. More

A well organised attraction which explains the history of this amazing attraction very well. We were amazed by how man from time immemorial has managed to live and use the natural landscape to their advantage. It is a very popular and busy visitor attraction so it is best if possible to avoid the months of July and August. There is... More

This is huge rock face where up to 1000 people lived until after the middle ages. It is really well laid out and extraordinary to appreciate the ingenuity of humans. Exciting adventure for little ones and safely barricaded. The staff were a bit cavalier when I asked about accessibility for my aged mother - she made it to the top... More

Well worth a visit. Set in a tranquil river/forest area with plenty to see. The main site is tastefully presented with parts to interest children and adults. There is a bit of walking over undulating ground involved, but there is also a cafe at the bottom for those who want to sit in the shade and wait for other family... More

If you are going to Las Caux, don't miss this 55,000 year old cliff dwelling, used since prehistoric Neanderthal times, and again for defense in the Middle Ages. It is especially meaningful if you are a fan of Jean Auel's series of books with the fictional, Ayla, growing up with cave people. Shelters of Stone and Land of Painted Caves... More

Highly reminiscent of our visit to Mesa Verde in Colorado, this was a treat. The written guide in English which we recieved at the entrance helped us enjoy all the details of the history of the site. Our awe and appreciation for the ingenuity and persistence of human survival were elevated even more by this site. No line to get... More

La Roque Saint-Christophe makes for an interesting couple of hours. There are interesting displays of some of the 'equipment' (winches, pulleys etc) that were used in medieval times, and the views down the Vezere valley are beautiful. More

This site is well worth visiting but make sure you have sturdy footwear because it's not always level underfoot. More

About 8 miles downriver from Montignac and the Lascaux prehistoric cave paintings is a large rock face (300-500 feet tall and over a kilometer long). A passing glacier carved a shelf midway up the face and this cut has been inhabited for 35,000+ years by up to 10,000 people and their domesticated animals at a time. A small wooden drawbridge...
