The demonstrations of medieval catapaults by costumed actors were rather hokey, but kids would have liked them. The climb to the top of the castle involves narrow uneven stair. Weary sturdy shoes.

As a side trip from Avignon I discovered the neat castle town of Baux de Provence surrounded by rock foundations. The village has neat shops which really were not overpriced, so small cafes and restaurants, also a neat museaums of carved dolls. Lots of bike trails around this area as it is so scenic and also very windy the day...

If you are in the area, you really need to stop in Les Baux, a medieval fortress and village that still has many walls and foundations intact. I suggest you arrive early as the cost of parking is 4E everywhere and the further up the hill you can get, the shorter the walk to the village. Entrance to the village...

These ruins have something for everyone. If interested in the history, they give you a free audioguide to explore the ruins. If you have kids, they have many exhibits from archery to jousting where they can participate. If you do not care about the last two, its worth a visit just for the spectacular views.

If you're anywhere near Les Baux, make sure you visit. In the dictionary under quaint and charming it says "see Les Baux".
Be sure to stop and have lunch or a drink at one of the cafes with an outdoor terrace that has a view of the valley. Very special.

Worth paying to go into the castle as most of the site is within its bounds. Not very suitable for small children (rocks, worn steps, steep drops etc), but older children will enjoy...

I have visited Les Baux de Provence during my trip to France in summer 2010.
The ruins themselves are not very impressive as it seems the stone they were made of served for house building for centuries. What remained is still showing how a big castle would have looked like 400 years ago. You should see the trebuchets and and...
