Comparatively unknown but open daytimes and in any kindof weather this is an atmospheric and peaceful environment. Surrounded by high ish old buildings, plenty of stone walls and neat little traditional plantings. Look out the entrances on a map and go take a look. And it's free. More

More a pastiche than the real item but it is a sanctuary of quiet and restfulness. Captures the spirit of the old Barbican. Then you can go for a few pints of Bass in the Dolphin. More

Maybe it only happens to me but I often walk through here to get from Lambhay Hill to New Street. Four times over maybe six weeks I encountered large noisy but generally benign groups of French school children picnicking away from the hackneyed tourist drags. Nobody ever goes here, up a back street behind the barbican, look out for carved ship on wall. Just as it would have been in Drake's time. free entry More
