My husband and visited here on an impromptu visit. We hadn't read any leaflets or reviews so were pleasantly surprised by the amount and variety of trains on view. Another surprise was the free/voluntary donation entry. Would definitely recommend a visit. More

We visit this excellen tmuseum about once a month - it is only a few miles away. Someone loves playing with the trains - they are often moved around. The space is clean and friendly - lots of things for children to try out. The play area is good fun. Sometimes the steam trains are running. There are often very... More

Visited on bank holiday Monday with husband and teenage children. Steam trains running so bought tickets and rode the short route down to the main building. There was a craft fair on which gave us something else to look at but stopped us being able to see/ photograph the trains as some stalls were set up alongside them. Having visited... More

Great museum with a lot of railway exhibits including the ill fated APT. There are operational locos on some days and exhibits for children. They also do some renovation work and you can see the progress in the workshop. One of the engines there was shown on a TV programme being rescued from the scrapyard in Turkey and returned to... Shildon has a superb collection of locomotives, which frequently change so you're bound to see something new from one visit to the next. I agree with what one reviewer said about the gutting of Hackworth's cottage, it used to be a fantastic museum but is now home to simple displays. All in all apart from the railway vehicles there a... More

This museum opened several years ago and retains its newness. It has improved over time by adding more engines and a good range at that. As in it's bigger version in York you are close up to the exhibits and there are steps to access the footplate of most engines, but sadly roped off on our visit. That could be... More
