About
Situated near Aldeburgh, in the beautiful coastal region of Suffolk, The Long Shop Museum tells the story of more than 200 years of the town's life and work. In the museum you will find a staggering collection of objects, ranging from full-size steam engines (the Richard Garrett & Sons engineering business made many hundreds of steam engines here) to touching mementos of the lives of the working people of the town.

Friendly staff. A very interesting look at a now lost part of British manufacture. We could have spent more time there because there was a lot to read. The audio descriptions we heard were nice. There were plenty more. I am srtill confused about the spelling of Garrett. Both spellings were there.

This was a great morning visiting a really interesting place. There were lots of full sized engines and audio information available to listen to. Lots of activities for younger children (3-8y) to do with hands on exhibits. Very friendly staff who were happy to chat.

We were looking for something to do in the area and found this by accident. Not only an amazing engineering history but also directly related to Millicent Garrett Fawcett the suffragist whose statue is in Parliament Square.
Lovely volunteers throughout and my husband said if we lived closer he'd definitely come and volunteer in the engineering workshop as the people were friendly and obviously knew what they were doing. Also, as a woman who DOES know about engineering, I also found all the people who volunteered treated me with the same level of respect and appreciation of knowledge that is often lacking in such places.

We have wanted to visit this museum for many years and were not dissapointed. Although fairly small it covers a lot about the history of Agricultural Engineering and the Garrett family. It was facinating to learn how what was in its day a huge industrial complex was connected by private railway to Leiston main line railway . Its hard now to realise now what an important centre of industry Leiston was.

Run by volunteers this museum gives an in sight into the many products that Garrett's made. Not a very large museum but well set out with good information. Plenty of hands on activities for children

A group of old boys visit what was a major industrial complex in it's time. Very interesting and well worth a visit even if like me you are not a steam engine fanatic.

A very eclectic collectrion of agricultural and other machinery. There is a good amount of very clear "How it works" interpretation.

I spent two a half hours there, I can however appreciate that others would feel an hour is right.

Some of the interpretation of female Garrett family members and their contribution to women's suffrage and health added breadth of interest.

A very nice mix of industrial and social history. The museum explains the history of the company based at the site, and how they moved from basic farm machinery through into more complex technology such as steam engines. The east that the site changed and evolved to accommodate this was interesting, as were the stories of the people who worked there.
