We found ourselves near Down House and we decide to go and visit the house (we already had stricken visiting the gardens as it was raining quite heavily). We were pleasantly surprised with the site and the things to do/see : audio guide tour give nice background information (Sir Richard Attenborough knows how to tell a story, but that is... More

Best go as an English Heritage member (or join there) otherwise you won't get much change from a tenner (£10). Interesting illustration of the life and work of Darwin and a fascinating insight into his family life. Visited in March, not much to see in the garden apart from a few a few daffodils, some primoses, primulas and what I... More

I agree with an earlier reviewer that it is very disappointing to see so many locked doors and the entire top floor blocked off. The middle floor is given over to the story of Darwin's voyage and research and all of that is very good. On the ground floor you can see the entrance area, living room, dining room, billiards... The exhibition at Down House is very well curated through several rooms in the Darwin family home. The study, Darwin's sanctuary is exactly as it was when he remonstrated for so many years harbouring his revelations of fact. The house has been carefully restored and the garden is splendid to walk through to view the dimensions of Down House. By... More

I'm a big Darwin fan anyway, but I did really enjoy this. I've wanted to visit for a while, and it didn't disappoint. However, I have to say that my husband also really enjoyed it, and he didn't have it on his "list as a must do". We were lucky enough to visit on a beautiful sunny autumn day, so... More

In this house, you go into the home of one of the most fabulous and controversial man of that period. He will serve as an inspiration while you read about his life , his work and his family. We took nearly 4 hours coz we read every single detail there is. Rooms are restored to how it was once when... More

On my last trip to the UK I was treated to a wonderful surprise which was a visit to Down House. As you follow through the rooms of his house, his thoughts, life, struggles and experiments are exposed for view. There is plenty to read, view and observe, plus some added hands-on for the younger people. The feel of the... More

Enjoy the ground floor as it keeps Darwin's home as it was superbly, then go out and walk in the gardens. You are free to roam through his actual greenhouses and to various wild or well kept gardens, then go back into the house, look again at the ground floor, walk back to your car and go home. The first... More

An interesting display on the man behind the theory of evolution and the struggles he faced in his day with the opposing Christian belief. A compact house that showed a smal look into a relaxed Victorian lifestyle. Best for me was learning of some of Darwins experiments. More

You are first directed to an exhibition upstairs on Darwin, his family, his explorations, and his books. All were interesting, with some well thought out points and some good parts of the exhibition for the younger members of my family. I enjoyed it thoroughly, but I was a little dissapointed about the number of closed doors, locked area's, signs saying... More
