His magnificent and enigmatic tomb is the centrepiece of a knot garden planted with the flowers which grew in his London garden four centuries ago.In 2008 the interior was transformed into a centre for exhibitions and events by the construction of contemporary gallery spaces. Three exhibitions each year explore the making of British gardens, and a programme of over 30 talks and interviews celebrates heroes and heroines from the forgotten plant-hunters and gardeners of the past to the designers and writers in fashion today. Visitors will also see a permanent display of paintings, tools, ephemera and historic artefacts: a glimpse into the uniquely British love affair with gardens. The Museum’s garden was created in 1980. At its heart is a knot garden designed by the Museum’s President, The Dowager Marchioness of Salisbury (who was then also re-making the gardens at Hatfield House, Hertfordshire). The reason for the seventeenth-century spirit of the design is that our garden also houses the tomb of the great plant-hunters, gardeners and collectors, John Tradescant the Elder and Younger, the rediscovery of which originally inspired the creation of a museum of garden history in the deconsecrated, and then derelict, church of St Mary-at-Lambeth. The knot garden and its surrounds are planted with species introduced by the Tradescants - such as the scarlet runner bean, red maple and tulip tree - and many others grown by them in their Lambeth garden. It is not only historically significant but also a lush and beautiful spot in the centre of London, cared for by a small horticultural team of staff and volunteers. « less

The Garden Museum is in an old church close to the Abbey. The small gardens outside were a pleasure to walk through and the museum itself was a perfect mix of exhibit, cafe, ambiance and little store. Loved the tea and rhubarb tart! More

this is a little dell of peace, i like to have a cuppa tea and piece of cake and take it into the gardens and sit amongst the plants and read about them. the carvings on the tomb of the captain who was mutinied on the bounty are a revelation More

Although I visited between events I was impressed by the building itself with its beautiful original knot garden and personal tributes to its originators. The garden fronting the road is currently being worked on by its local volunteers and head gardener to install a new " border" designed by Sarah Price. She has designed winning gardens at Hampton Court ,Chelsea... More

The Garden Museum) (aka The Museum of Garden History) is located on the grounds of the former St. Mary's Lambeth Church in south London, a short walk from the Lambeth North Underground station. It was recommended to me by a historian colleague who rightly suggested I would enjoy the grounds as well as the historical setting. The garden museum was... More

There was a small collection of tools and odd bits, yet it advises it has some 9,000 items. Where are they? There was nothing on the evolution of garden design or design in general. Nothing of the great plant collectors. Nothing on the great gardens of the UK. An empty main level with exception of a shop and gloomy cafe... More

What a beautiful example of an 17th century knot garden! I was very impressed by the Garden Museum not only because of the great food at the cafe but as well as the current Tom-Stuart Smith Collection. Although the permanent collection is a tad small, the other exhibitions completely make up for it, making my trip to the museum a... More

First off, the renovated former-church is beautiful inside and out! The cafe and shop are wonderful, but it was the exhibits themselves that hooked us! We were a group that didn't know much about gardens, but the pictures from Jerry Harpur were so beautiful and Tom Stuart-Smith is a genius! Located right across from Parliament in a perfect scenic location! More

A beautiful spot near to the Thames, great potential but!!!. The exhibition of old gardening tools upstairs is ok but small and nothing special. The garden itself takes about 5 mins. max to walk round and is very poorly maintained and uninteresting. We got in on a 2 for 1 voucher, but had we had to pay 2 x £7.00... More

There is nothing to see here. There is an exhibition downstairs showing some designs created by a modern gardener. This exhibition consisted of nothing but photographs, there was no real accessible information on planting or anything interesting. Upstairs there is a small exhibition showing some old gardening equipment, most of which you will have seen before and some of us... More

Down the river from Westminster (a beautiful walk). The little museum has a neighborhood garden outside and a small garden in the churchyard as well. The real gem is the interior exhibits. There's a small history exhibit upstairs and rotating exhibits downstairs. A cute cafe and gift shop make it a complete lunch stop and afternoon entertainment. I loved it!... More
