Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My three year old grandson was treated to a surprise over a month ago: a trip to see the animals followed by a pottery class. The class was advertised as, 'Three sessions including hand building, glazing and a turn on the pottery wheel' at a cost of £10.00. At the end of the session, we were told that we would have to return in a week or two to finish the two pieces of pottery - the glazing. Upon our return, we were informed that we would have to pay extra for the glazing. Hackney City Farm agreed that this wasn't clear from the advertisement and promised to put it right. Two months later, and they have failed to keep their promise. You can imagine my dismay when, after a third visit to H.C.F. to collect these works of art, one of my grandson's precious (to him, and to me) pieces of pottery couldn't be found. The staff were very flippant about it, claiming that the cost of the activity was for the experience only, not necessarily for the finished product. My grandson was advised to take another piece of unclaimed pottery instead. He was most upset about this and refused to because he couldn't see his name on any of these pieces. Yes, he's only 3 but he can spell and recognise his name. Only after insisting on a refund, was my daughter given back her money. This is unsatisfactory and disappointing.

Took a walk into the farm. Lots of animals for children to see and touch with plenty of hand gel near by. Lovely wooded area beside where they grow vegetable. If you have young children a lovely place to take them. No admission fee but donations welcome.

Nice to wander around to see the farm animals however avoid the cafe, not as good as it used to be...40 mins wait for cold scrambled eggs on hard chewy toast. Seems a lot of staff but tricky to get anyone’s attention, coffee from a cracked mug and just a shrug to say they would put it in bin when I was finished 🤨

The afrm is walking distance from our home, so we decided to go and see some animals. The farm is small, but ok, I absolutely loved the free-roaming chickens!

LOCATION. Nearest Overground station: Hoxton or Cambridge Health, with the farm right in the middle.

If you’re walking from Cambridge Heath, step west along Hackney Road for around seven minutes. The farm will be on your right inside Haggerston Park.

If you’re coming from Hoxton, can also consider visiting the Geffrye Museum of the Home. It’s closed at the moment for renovation; official website shows an expected opening in Spring 2020.

LONDON’S FARM SCENE. If you’re interested in animals but got stuck inside M25, there are many city farms / mini zoos that might satisfy your needs. The Vauxhall City Farm is obviously very conveniently located, while Isle of Doggers can also consider the Mudchute Farm. The latter has the added benefit of a splendid view of Canary Wharf buildings behind the pigs and geese. And they both got llamas.

I’ll reserve the Hanwell Zoo, which is in the middle of a forest, to those who’s willing to get lost for thirty minutes through woods and bees.

ANIMAL INTERACTION. The ducks and chicks are on the same side as you. An urban horror story if you’re over and over a city person! So be prepared for close encounters, and don’t come with a false sense of security.

Sooner or later, you’re also find convenience holes here and there. A goat has jumped out from one of these and started following me before heading to his next destination.

LABELLING. The sheep are in the donkey’s ring and pigs are in the sheep’s. So use common sense before consulting the display boards.

CLOSING RITUAL. The farm closes at 4pm. And here comes the best part. Come fifteen minutes before then and staffers will start opening the gates. Hop after hop, the horses and donkeys and goats will return to their barns, unguided.

An impressive back and forth of loaded words and desperate entreating will ensure if any part of the process has failed gracefully. On my day a horsey has stopped walking right in front of her barn. And let’s just say – what follows is hilarious.

The hare and the guinea pigs are fairly well-hid. See if you can find them.

I organised a workshop for a number of families for us to learn all about bees and how they make honey. Ken, the beekeeper at Hackney City Farm put together a great agenda to engage both adults and children and teach us all about the history of bee keeping, distinguishing the different types of bees in a hive, followed by a trip up to the roof of the cafe to check out the hives. Having played a bit of 'where's Wally' with various pictures down in the education room, the childen were able to identify the queen in the real hives and see a waggle dance in action. It was great to get the kids so close to the action, where they could see nectar and honey in the hive frames, as well as identifying the cell where the next queen bee was developing. The kids also got quite excited about getting to wear the full beekeeping garb. Another task was to find pollinators in action down in the farm's garden.

We also had time to cover the wider farm and see the ducks and chickens who had free rein of the yard as well as goats, pigs and ponies.

Highly recommend organising a group visit, there is lots of inspiration on their site in terms of the programmes they can run.

Took my 12 yr old son after a visit to Columbia Road market. Only stayed 10 minutes as the farm seemed very run down. It was much scruffier and smellier than previously, which was disappointing. They may be going for a ‘rustic’ look however it was simply unpleasant. They need to put some work into improving and repairing the farm.
