I visited this house on a Monday when they hold a specific morning tour at 11am. The house was everything you would want to see in a Georgian style home and the guide whose name I unfortunately can not remember was excellent. It was £6 to get in but if you retain the ticket you can re enter Fairfax house... More

Fairfax House is a wonderful Georgian town house in the centre of York built for Viscount Fairfax in 1762. The property was allowed by the Local Authority to fall into disrepair (that's a familiar story!) until York Civic Trust took over the property in 1982 and carried out extensive repairs. Intricate renovations were expertly carried out by a local army... More

The history of this "house" is quite incredible. The staff and volunteers on hand to pass this on to the visitor, are very knowledgeable and friendly. It is a window into a past life that is well worth the entrance fee and time to visit. More

This is a truly brilliant museum. An absolutely gorgeous Georgian town house, with very friendly staff. Each room is packed with furniture, paintings, ornaments and displays. Many of them have a guide to tell you about the history of the house, and how the people who used the furniture lived. Each room is beautifully restored, and although many of the... More

If you go on the day when there are guided tours, it will make your visit much more interesting and informative, as the guides can tell you more about each room in greater detail. More

Well worth a visit if you like Georgian architecture and furniture. Too much to see in one visit though but your ticket lasts a year, so that's good! More

Loved the chatty guides in each room. It is a shame that not more of the house couldn't be preserved. More

I went on the guided tour which happens every Sunday morning. The tour guide really brought the story of the Fairfax family to life and provided a lot of context to the hidden meanings of the house and its decoration, which otherwise I would have missed. The house is stuffed with the fabulous furniture of the Terry Collection, so if... More
