Armed with newly acquired membership for the National Trust, we set off to visit the Workhouse in Southwell. We turned off too soon to Southwell (no sign post on that road showing the way to the Workhouse), so ended up walking by the side of a stream and through the woods, which was quite pleasant. We joined an introductory guided... More

I visited the Workhouse at the beginning of March this year and overall, the experience was interesting and enjoyable until I left my audio equipment and proceeded to the exit and through an open door and to my dismay, which I did not realise until afterwards, there was a drop of about 12 inches or so to a stone step.... I visited the Workhouse after my uplifting visit to the nearby Minster and was plunged into distress as you can still feel the appalling suffering which went on there so many years ago. I do think it was a good place to visit though as we have to face our terrible past and atone for it. More

Hi Kevin. The Workhouse can have a powerful effect on some of our visitors. For some the Workhouse was a place of despair and suffering, however, for others the Workhouse was a beacon of hope as their fate outside of the Workhouse would often be much more terrible. It provided food and shelter for those unfortunate souls who had nothing... More

An amazing insight in to times gone by, when the poor of the 19th century were given no option but to live in the Workhouse. Familes were seperated from their loved ones and children and worked long hours and given oatmeal and water for most of their meals. Empty rooms, without furniture, but you can use your imagination, when standing... More

This was a real eye opener what the poorhouse was really like. The place itself was brilliant we went midweek and there were no actual actors there, but still an enjoyable visit. The prices were quite reasonable. The one down side is there is no catering facilities on site. There was an information board at the capark to a nursery,... More

This is a interesting building with a story to tell of social history in the 1800's. The rooms in the Workhouse are mostly empty so a bit of imagination is required. There is an audio guide which helps to do this by describing how the rooms would have been furnished plus interviews with "past" inmates. I went because I was... More

We visited The Workhouse on sunday 25th march what a fantastic place , the architecture of the building everything about it was very eyeopening . We were shocked to find out that the building was used into the 70`s to house the needy and people waiting for council homes. The only thing lacking was no cafe like most NT sites... More

Have two ancestors who spent time in a workhouse so keen to visit this National Trust property. Other reviews mention the lack of furniture and empty rooms, my daughter and I thought this was actually a plus as long as you use the audio. + good audio guide - make sure you ask for one + like the fact the... A well-organized visit by 82 members of Bexley Civic Society. Our visit started with a short film of life in the Workhouse and describing how it all began and why. The building and way of life in The Workhouse was very well described on the audio guides that we used. Would thoroughly recommend a visit to this National Trust property.... More
