We visited Ecclesall Woods for the first time last Saturday morning, having arrived in Sheffield on Friday afternoon. We took our two grandchildren, Bethany 8 and Thomas 10 and parked the car on Abbey Road. The weather was glorious, the sun complimenting the snowy paths and icy trunks over the little streams. the woods in the south west of sheffield have never been anything else. Although managed and farmed for wood and charcoal they have a continuous line back to the ancient forests of Britain. The result is a large diversity of plants and habitats. The woods include areas of sweet chestnuts - planted for the nut harvest each autumn still harvested... more
