Set in very picturesque countryside near the Welsh border, about a half hour south of Shrewsbury, the appeal of Stokesay is clearly visible. Not a true ‘castle,’ but rather a fortified manor house, Stokesay is impressive! Tree ring dating suggests that Stokesay was built between 1240- 1291 AD! Stokesay is one of my favorite English Heritage sites in the Uk this fortified Manor house is so very well preserved and very unique in structure and character set in lovely peaceful countryside. Visited Stokesay Castle yesterday with my partner. It cost us both six pounds which I considered good value, especially as this included a Walkman type commentary which adequately described each room. I love going round castles and stately homes but it was even more of a pleasure to visit Stokesay as it is so well preserved. You really could imagine... More

This historical site is pretty, atmospheric and beautifully kept. If you do not want to use the little cafe then there is a very pleasant picnic area by the car park.
