Leazes Park was opened in 1873 - Newcastle's first public park - and was recently renovated with lottery money to bring it back to its Victorian Glory. Although close to the city centre, it has quiet woodland walks, open grassy spaces for picnicing, and a large boating lake complete with ducks, swans and geese.
