We had such a great experience at Big Pit. You go down the shaft with a miner and he explains to you what it used to be like for miners and their family working in the pit and the working conditions down there. It was very interesting (and spooky!). We also visited the museum and saw the little interactive film.... More

We just found this place to visit off the internet as we were staying near the area for a long weekend. Well organized, friendly people, especially the ex miners taking us on the tour into the old mines. There is so much to learn here, it was a great experience. Great outing and highly recommended for all ages. Will definitely... More

We visited Big Pit as it was suggested to us and I'm glad we did! It is very well organised and thought out, with friendly and informative guides who have experience of mining and vast knowledge of the history of the profession. The tour is interesting and your encouraged to ask questions along the way. The locker rooms and shower... More

From the museum on how the pit was worked the dangers of the job, to the pit itself. Dressed in miners hats, lights, and down in the cage at one point all lights out . Finish in the shower room where the shift ended, and as it is in Wales it is Free.Great day out. More

As a mixed group with 5 adults and 9 children between 18 months and 16 years old, we were all pleasantly surprised by Big Pit. Driving through an industrial estate, I wasnt sure we were in the right place but there it was! Free Entry (a huge plus!) and you get to go on a tour underground with real miners... More

Free, educational, informative, enjoyable .... spent the day going back and fore on the neighbouring steam train and then wandering around the pit surface - opted out of the underground tour as we had a 3 year old with us. The simulator is excellent and certainly gave us a taste of the real thing without getting cold and dirty. The... More

Fantastic experience, 300 foot down a real coal mine. Both kids (8&13) were impressed and amazed by what people used to do as a job there. Adults, it makes you realise that your job really isnt that bad compared to even 50 years ago and it makes you appreciate your life a little more. The mine itself is quite low... More
