We had such a great experience at Big Pit. You go down the shaft with a miner and he explains to you what it used to be like for miners and their family working in the pit and the working conditions down there. We just found this place to visit off the internet as we were staying near the area for a long weekend. Well organized, friendly people, especially the ex miners taking us on the tour into the old mines. There is so much to learn here, it was a great experience. From the museum on how the pit was worked the dangers of the job, to the pit itself. Dressed in miners hats, lights, and down in the cage at one point all lights out . Finish in the shower room where the shift ended, and as it is in Wales it is Free.Great day out. More

Free, educational, informative, enjoyable .... spent the day going back and fore on the neighbouring steam train and then wandering around the pit surface - opted out of the underground tour as we had a 3 year old with us. Fantastic experience, 300 foot down a real coal mine. Both kids (8&13) were impressed and amazed by what people used to do as a job there.
